Child Sexual Abuse Claim Being Investigated at Avon YMCA

2-year-old alleging fondling, YMCA, police investigating

The Avon Police Department, as well as the French Creek YMCA and Child Protective Services are investigating whether a 2-year-old girl was sexually fondled by a man at the YMCA, located on Recreation Drive in Avon. YMCA personnel, after reviewing tapes, said it does not see evidence to support the allegation and will continue to assist authorities. “It was brought to our attention yesterday,” Rick Haase, the Vice President of Marketing for the Greater Cleveland YMCA said on Jan. 16. “We’re assisting both the Avon Police and Child Protective Services and doing everything possible to help investigate the allege abuse. “We take this very seriously as one of Northeast Ohio’s largest non-profit organizations.” Haase said a parent contacted the …

Kaiser Permanente 12th Annual Eagle Run Takes Off Saturday

Event benefits Avon Schools Educational Endowment Fund and YMCA

The streets of Avon will be filled with runners and walkers for the Kaiser Permanente 12th Annual Eagle Run on Saturday, May 26. Starting at the new location of Avon High School, runners and walkers can begin registering at 7:15 a.m. Options for runners include participating in either the 5-mile or 5K events. Walkers can enjoy the 5K Walk. Both the 5-mile and 5K Run/Walk will begin at 8:30 a.m. and the 1 Mile Kids’ Fun Run (ages 13 & under) starts at 10 a.m. Consistent with the past 11 years, half of the proceeds of the Kaiser Permanente 2012 Avon Eagle Run will go to the Avon Schools Educational Endowment Fund. Mayor Praises Carjacking-Thwarter

The 76-year-old Avon Lake man who helped stop a carjacking in Avon Lake is a regular at the French Creek YMCA, Avon mayor Jim Smith said at Monday's meeting of City Council. "I wouldn't mess with him," Smith said of Ron Cherni. "He's a tough hombre. I remember his dad. He was 96, and I wouldn't have messed with him, either." Cherni was at the Speedway at the corner of Walker Road and Route 83 in Avon Lake on Dec. 8 when Bryan Schiffbauer, 23, who had just pleaded guilty in Avon Lake Municipal Court to a misdemeanor drug charge, allegedly told a woman at the Speedway that he had a gun and tried to steal her SUV. Viewfinder: Avon YMCA Hosts Swim for Diabetes

Annual fundraising event held throughout northeast Ohio

The 26th annual Swim for Diabetes was held at 47 pools throughout Northeast Ohio over the weekend, including the French Creek YMCA on Friday night.  The annual event is the largest fundraising event for the Diabetes Association of Greater Cleveland.   Swimmers of every age and skill level participated in the swim. Mary Ann Nicolay, a health care educator with the Diabetes Association staff, says the organization hopes to raise around $250,000 with Swim for Diabetes.  "What's great is that all of the money raised during the weekend stays in Northeast Ohio", said Nicolay.  The group relies on volunteers to work and manage the events, including lifeguards like Avon High School junior Maddie Michelich, who volunteered her time  during the swim…

Trucker Spotted Watching Movie While Driving on I-90

Avon police pulled over a semi truck around 5:50 p.m. on Feb.10 after seeing the driver playing a movie on the dashboard DVD player while driving on Interstate 90. He was also not using his turn signal, police reported. Police issued a warning to the driver of the truck, which was registered out of New York, on paying attention. Impersonation Another out-of-state resident notified Avon Police that they received a phone call from someone from the "Department of Justice." This time, a woman in Massachusetts told police that the man identified himself as Mike Johnson and that he threatened her if she did not send a check to him for $12,000 for a "loan." Door Kicked in on Gated Court

A home in the 3300 block of Gated Court was broken into on Jan. 12. According to Avon police, the homeowner went to run errands around 9:30 a.m. and, when she returned home around 1 p.m., discovered the front door had been kicked in. Nothing appeared to have been taken, police said. Witnesses reported seeing strange cars in the neighborhood that morning.
