Ann M. Songer (nee Pintenich), 83 of Avon formerly of Wickliffe, passed away at Brighton Gardens in Westlake on Dec. 21, 2012 following a lengthy illness. Ann was born in Cleveland on Aug. 13, 1929. She graduated from Fenn College (now Cleveland State University) with a degree in Social Work. She worked for the government as a social worker, Worden Elementary School as a playground guard], and was a homemaker. Ann was active with the United Way, Wickliffe Band Boosters, Avon Senior Center, and The Gathering Place, a cancer support group in Westlake. Leonard J. Piazza, age 93, passed away on Wednesday June 20, 2012. He was born in Cleveland on July 18, 1918. A lifelong member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Avon, he has lived in Avon since 1921. He was a farmer after the war and started Piazza Brothers Greenhouse and later worked for Avon Parks and Recreation Department, retiring at the age of 85. He is survived by his daughter SallyAnn (Robert) Glenn, granddaughters Cheryl (Robert) Cramer and Judith (Robert) McGorray, grandchildren Elizabeth, Andrew, Stephanie, Robbie, Katie, and Tricia. Betty J. Maneri, 83 of Avon, formerly of Cleveland, passed away Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at Main Street Care Center in Avon Lake. Betty was born Jan. 1, 1929 in Maple Heights and has lived in Avon since 1965. She graduated from Marymount High School in Garfield Heights and in 1947 began her career as an X-ray technician retiring in 1993 with Drs. Russell Berkebile & Associates. She was a registered technician, a member of Holy Trinity Church and the Ladies Guild. In her spare time, she enjoyed reading medical stories, sewing and spending time with her family. Former treasurer of Lorain City Schools
Catherine A. Stanziano (nee Krajeski) 69 of Avon Lake, formerly of Lorain, passed away suddenly on Friday, May 25, 2012. Catherine was born in Lorain on Dec. 20, 1942 where she remained a lifelong resident until 2003 when she moved to Avon Lake. She was employed for 31 years as an accountant in the treasurer's office with Lorain City Schools and with Clearview treasurer's Office for 10 years. She was an active member of St. Joseph Church in Avon Lake, a board member for LORMET Credit Union, and participated on the Avon Ladies Golf League. Passed away following a truck accident.
John F. Fox, age 55, passed away April 25, 2012 following a truck accident off I-65 in Bullitt County, KY. Mr. Fox was born on May 16, 2012 in Bay Village and graduated from Avon High School in 1974. He lived in Sheffield Lake and worked at Nordson prior to his enlistment in the U.S. Marine Corp. from 1975-1979 and continued to work for Nordson until he retired in 2007. Virginia Anderson retired from Avon Lake school district.
Virginia "Ginny" Anderson (nee Meister), 65 of Avon Lake, passed away at home on April 23, 2012 following a short battle with cancer. She was born on March 11, 1947 in Sandusky where she was raised. After graduating from Perkins High School in 1965, she worked as a preschool teacher and eventually retired from Avon Lake City Schools. Ginny was very active in the community and at St. Joseph Church where she participated in the Women's Circle, Ladies Guild and choir. She was president of the Avon Lake American Legion Women's Auxiliary, Lady of the Snows and also volunteered with hospice. Eldon G. Turner, 85 of Avon Lake, formerly of Windsor, IL, passed away, Friday, March 30, 2012 at The Renaissance, Olmsted Township, following a brief illness. Mr. Turner served his country during WWII as a member of the United States Coast Guard. He is survived by children Janet L. St. George (David) and Harry J. Turner (Kristin Sutfin); grandchildren Daniel and Leigha St. George and Kristin's children Heather, Cathrine and Rachel and their children Isabella, Austin, Hunter and Chase; as well as other nieces and nephews. Erwin J. Kapalko, 81 of Avon Lake formerly of Delaware, OH passed away Friday, Feb. 17, 2012 at EMH Regional Medical Center following complications of pneumonia. Mr. Kapalko was born Dec. 14, 1930 in Smock, PA and had lived in Avon Lake the past 34 years. He was a Korean War veteran serving in the US Air Force from 1949 until accepting an offer to join the US Army under the officers training program. He was honorably discharged from active duty in 1952 and continued to serve his country in the Army Reserves and was ultimately honorably discharged from the Army Medical Service Corp with the rank of First Lieutenant.
