Power Plant has already paid taxes to county auditor which school district is hoping to apply to this year's budget.
A late tax payment by NRG/GenOn due to the Avon Lake School District may cause a few headaches, but no actual financial loss to the district. Avon Lake School District treasurer Autumn Streng said the company that runs the power plant, NRG, made a late $1.5 million payment to the Lorain County Auditor’s Office, but it has not yet been forwarded to the district. The money is owed from public utilities personal property and tangible personal property taxes. “When we got final tax settlement on March 21, I received the final number and began posting,” Streng said. “Then I realized I was short by a about a million (dollars). I asked the county auditor who said (NRG) paid their taxes, but paid them late.” That money has not yet been forwarded …

Approved levy will result in $253.58 increase per $100,000 home valuation.
The Avon Lake Board of Education voted on Jan. 29 to proceed with a 10-year, $6.5 million emergency levy for the May 7 Primary Election. An 8.28 millage rate was certified by the Lorain County Auditor’s Office. District Treasurer Autumn Streng said the The annual cost per $100,000 valuation is $253.58. The meeting was the third held this month to discuss a levy. The last meeting held was to determine the amount the district wanted to generate each year. A 9.04-mill levy was defeated in November by 675 votes. Still uncertain is the effect the 2015 closing of the NRG (formerly GenOn) Power Plant will have on the district. City buying the plant is "not an option."
Avon Lake Councilman Rob James testified on the effect GenOn Plant's Avon Lake facility's closing would have on the city March 20. This week, he discussed his testimony and plans the city is taking in the wake of the plant probable shuttering in 2015. He said the city was taking a proactive approach and acting on the presumption the plant will close. “(GenOn) said the evaluation is continuing; it leaves an open discussion to what that means,” James said March 29. “It is a possibility it may remain open, but the possibility is slim. We have to act as if it’s going to close in 2015.” He said the city stepping in and paying for scrubbers to keep the plant open under EPA guidelines would not happen. If GenOn closes in 2015, Avon Lake will have a massive building, as well as lot, on its hands. We’re asking readers what they’d like to see in the space that adjoins Miller Road Park. We’ve gotten suggestions on Facebook as well as in our comments’ section. Public sentiment seems to support letting the GenOn plant close, even if it means a loss in tax revenue and taking advantage of the site’s proximity to Lake Erie for more recreational purposes. How much would developing that area cost? That option has yet to be explored. Look for a poll soon on whether you, the residents, would support a tax levy to pay for extensive renovations to the site.

NPR report says Avon Lake power plant has high toxic air emissions
Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH), is encouraging the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to force Avon Lake’s GenOn electric power plant in to limit its toxic air pollution. Kucinich released a statement on Nov. 8, commenting on an NPR report that the power plant was on a “secret EPA watch list.” “Yesterday, it was reported that the GenOn electric power plant in Avon Lake had released more than 2 million pounds of toxic chemicals in 2010,” Kucinich said in the statement. “The discharge of pollution in those quantities is dangerous and it is detrimental to the health of all Ohioans."
