Flash Mob at Graduation; Call Them Maybe

A senior prank goes off without a hitch at Avon Lake High School Graduation

In the season of graduations, some things are fairly predictable: the valedictorians and salutatorians will give moving speeches, tassels will move from right to left and hats will be tossed signaling the end of 13 years of required schooling. Two Avon Lake High School seniors managed to pull off a senior prank in the form of a flash mob that went off without a hitch at the school's June 2 graduation. Nearly two dozen students, including one surprise addition, formed two lines following senior speaker Brian Webner’s speech, and a flash mob broke out to Carly Rae Jepsen's hit song, Call Me Maybe. “We didn’t have a senior prank this…

Valedictorian Michael Butrey: You Only Live Once

The ALHS senior speaks of living once, advises, "bite off more than you can chew and then chew it" in his valedictorian speech.

Avon Lake High School graduated 309 seniors on June 3. Here is class valedictorian Michael Butrey's speech: "Good evening faculty, staff, graduates, and honored guests. Yes it’s that time in the program, the moment you have all been waiting for, the time where you all get to listen to a guy named Booch. Don’t worry; I will do my best to keep things interesting. I would just like to start out by thanking my father, mother, sister, family and mentors as I truly would not be where I am today without all of their guidance and support. I would also like to recognize those who truly deserve it. For starters, there is one of our student leaders who has put more time and effort than anyone into organizing and leading school events, and has truly …

Valedictorian Kevin Manouchehri Speaks of Perseverance

Nobody trips over mountains. It is the small pebble that causes you to stumble.

When Avon High School valedictorian Kevin Manouchehri took the stage on June 3 to address the Class of 2012, he considered a few different approaches before setting on a theme: perseverance. Below is Manouchehri's speech. "First of all, I know it’s hot, and everyone wants to get out of here. So I will be as brief with this speech as I can. As I waited until the last minute to write this speech, I thought about what the best way to sum up this great class would be. First, I thought about writing a beautiful poem. Then, I remembered I’m awful at poetry. So, then I considered making this speech comedic and telling jokes the entire time. What better way to send this never serious, fun-loving class off than by having a funny speech?! However, …
