Larry Laird Named New ALHS Football Coach

Replaces Dave Dlugosz, who retired last year

Former Avon Lake High School assistant football coach Larry Laird was approved as football coach by the Avon Lake Board of Education Jan. 8. He is replacing 21-year coach Dave Dlugosz, who retired in 2012 after winning 200 football games. “He left a couple of years ago to (be the head coach at) Medina and did a fine job down there,” Avon Lake Superintendent of Schools Bob Scott said. Laird, 44, became the Medina High School head football coach in 2010, leading the Battling Bees to a 9-3 record before returning to Avon Lake.  He was the offensive coordinator for nine of the last 10 years under Dlugosz, including the Shoremen’s Division II state championship in 2003. “Our expectations never change,” Laird told The Plain Dealer. “We want to …

With Chip Kelly off the board, where will Jimmy Haslam and Joe Banner go next?

Around this time last week, I wasn't very high on Chip Kelly becoming the Cleveland Browns next head coach. Yet somehow I spent too many moments of my weekend checking Twitter and ESPN to see if Kelly chose mashed or baked potatoes for his steak dinners with the Browns and Philadelphia Eagles. Finally, on Sunday The Plain Dealer reported the Browns "walked away" because Kelly wouldn't likely leave the University of Oregon. Sure. I believe it. Just like the nerd in high school who told everyone he just didn't thing taking the homecoming queen to prom wasn't going to work out. She didn't say no, he just didn't thing it was a good idea. No matter what Chip Kelly will stay in Oregon and Cleveland is back to square one. There are many names …
