ALHS' Dr. Walker is Named Ohio Principal of the Year

Dr. Joanie Walker first principal in Ohio to earn honor twice.

Avon Lake High School Principal Dr. Joanie Walker made history last week after being named the 2013-14 Ohio High School Principal of the Year by the Ohio Association of Secondary School Administrators (OASSA). 5 Players Facing Suspensions Over Harlem Shake YouTube Video

In-school and game suspensions issued.

Editor's note: Comments will require editorial approval before being posted on the site. A video posted on YouTube has resulted in in-school and game suspensions for five Avon Lake High School baseball players. Superintendent Bob Scott had said earlier this week that the students could face discipline from the athletic office in addition to scholastic discipline. Scott said 18 JV and varsity players were identified in the video, which shows some of them simulating sex acts as Harlem Shake plays. “Five players were identified as being inappropriate,” Scott said. The five will receive up to three days of in school suspension and up to two game suspensions. Scott said the baseball team will also be doing community service. The team opens the …

'Harlem Shake' Video Could Get Some Avon Lake Baseball Players in Trouble

Footage shot in Avon Lake locker room includes vulgar behavior and was posted on YouTube.

Some members of the Avon Lake High School baseball team will face some sort of discipline after vulgar footage of the team was posted on YouTube, the popular media site that is open to the public. The video featured team members performing to the popular Harlem Shake. The 30-second video opens with about a dozen members of the team readying for play, while one featured student simulates a sex act, while dressed, on a trashcan. After approximately 15 seconds, the entire team is featured dancing, some in compromising positions and some simply dancing.  The video was taken down March 11 as soon as school officials were notified. The video appears to have been taken in the Avon Lake locker room, where a large “AL” logo was visible on the floor…

Rumors of "something memorable" become elaborate.

A Twitter comment about "something memorable" happening on Feb. 21 led to a police investigation after Avon Police were alerted by a student about a twitter message. On Feb. 20, Avon Police received a call from the parent of an Avon High School student  asking if they were aware of a Twitter post regarding an issue that was supposed to occur at the high school. The Twitter post reference Feb. 21 2013 as a date that "would be remembered,'' a press release by the police department said. The tweet was originally posted by an Avon High School student at the end of January. The student is now attending Lorain County JVS. Students began asking if school would be open Feb. 21.
