Flu Still Widespread in Northeast Ohio, Take our Poll

The illness has been reaching high levels across the state and country.

Ohio is in the midst of an “unusually” active influenza season, the Ohio Department of Health reports.  The Lorain County Board of Health, which oversees Avon, and the Lorain City Health Department, which oversees Avon Lake, are offering tips on preventing the flu as well as where to get flu shot in the county and Avon Lake. According to FluView, the flu is widespread throughout Ohio (numbers for Lorain County are not available). Flu Shots Available in Lorain County: It's Not Too Late

Flu kicking into high gear in Ohio

If you haven’t caught the flu this year, you’re not in the clear - according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the flu season can extend into May. The  Lorain County General Health District (LCGHD) said in Lorain County in 2012, there were 166 flu cases reported, a dramatic increase from the 18 cases seen in 2011. “The yearly flu vaccine is the first and most important step in protecting against flu viruses and the good news is you can still get your shot at locations throughout Lorain County,” the LCGHD said on its flu website, LorainCountyFlu.com, which lists information as well as clinics, participating local pharmacies and grocery stores. The CDC says to take everyday preventive actions to stop the spread of germs. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it. Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread this way. Flu Season Heating Up; Do You Have Your Flu Shot?

It's here. The Flu. Did you get your flu shot? According to the CDC's information page, Ohio reached the level of "regional" outbreaks last week. Four states, including New York, have already reached "widespread" outbreaks. If you haven't gotten your shot, you might want to get one--quickly. The Lorain County General Health District has a nifty "flu shot locator" for Lorain County. According to the Huffington Post, Dec. 2-8, 2012 is National Influenza Vaccination Week, a campaign organized by the CDC to encourage vaccination. Who needs to get a flu shot? Getting a Flu Shot is Easy in Avon

The flu is on the rise in Ohio

Last week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that influenza cases in Ohio were "sporadic." This week, Ohio is listed as having "regional" cases as more cases have been reported, just one step below "widespread," the worst designation. According to the CDC, between 5 and 20 percent of Americans get the flu each winter. The flu, or seasonal influenza, is caused by  influenza viruses infecting  the respiratory tract -- nose, throat and lungs. More than 200,000 people are hospitalized each year because of the flu. Up to 49,000 people die each year from flu-related complications. Those most vulnerable to the flu are the elderly, children, pregnant women, and people with health problems including heart disease, blood …
