Kevin Ward Announces Candidacy For Mayor of Avon

Four-year councilman, Kevin Ward, will run for mayor in November General Election.

A second candidate, also an Avon councilman, has announced he will run for mayor of Avon in November 2013. Councilman Kevin Ward, in his fourth year serving Ward III, announced his candidacy April 25. Earlier this week, Ward 1 Counclman Bryan Jensen announced he will run for the seat currently held by Jim Smith, who said he is retiring this year. “When I was elected to Avon City Council in 2009, my only desire was to serve the residents of Avon to the best of my ability,” Ward said in a press release. “I have enjoyed serving with Mayor Jim Smith and his staff, along with my fellow members of council. With Mayor Smith’s retirement at the end of the year, I believe Avon will need someone with leadership skills and a wide range of experience …

Jensen Announces Mayoral Candidacy, Seeks to Succeed Jim Smith

Four-term councilman will seek seat in November 2013 election.

The first candidate hoping to replace Mayor Jim Smith is in. Four-term Avon City Councilman Bryan Jensen, 52, announced he is running for the mayor’s seat in Avon in the November 2013 election. Five-term Avon mayor, Jim Smith, has said he will not seek re-election. Smith began serving as the city’s part-time mayor in 1994. His term ends at the end of 2013. The position is now full time.  “It has been a pleasure to work with Mayor Smith under whose leadership we’ve seen amazing growth in Avon,” Jensen, who represents Ward 1, said.  “My goal is to continue that legacy of smart growth and to do my part to keep Avon a wonderful and safe place to live and work.” For the past eight years, Jensen, the president and owner of Pinehaven Greenhouses…

In Sheffield Village, Monday is 'Mayor Jim Smith Day'

March 25 is set aside for Avon mayor who made Village a “better place to work and live.”

“Look to your future and ask yourself, ‘What do you want your town to look like 10 or 15 years from now?’” These were the words of Sheffield Village Mayor John Hunter, honoring neighboring Avon Mayor Jim Smith, at the March 20 Mayors Lunch at Tom's Country Place in Avon. Hunter read a proclamation to a sold-out crowd at the luncheon, which featured state-of-the-city addresses from mayors in Avon, Avon Lake, Sheffield Lake and Village before declaring March 25 as "Mayor Jim Smith Day" in the Village. Hunter said Smith “graciously offered” his friendship when Hunter became mayor in 2008 and offered many long-term insights “that will stay with me.” “Maintain your hometown dreams, maintain the atmosphere of a small village,” was Smith’s …

Zilka Injects Humor, Speaks of Compassion at Mayors Luncheon

Says city is "doing well" in trying times.

Borrowing a page from the Jim Smith book of humorous speeches, Avon Lake Mayor Greg Zilka took the opportunity to entertain a sold-out crowd at this year’s Mayors Luncheon March 20 at Tom's Country Place. The annual lunceon features mayors from Avon, Avon Lake, Sheffield Lake and Sheffield Village. He opened with a joke about how Smith called him last week to tell him Easter was postponed this year. “I asked him how that could be and he proceeded to tell me that Pope Francis came out on the balcony, saw his shadow and now we have six more weeks of Lent,” Zilka said. “Now I can’t say that, but Mayor Smith can get away with that.” He then jokingly said he met Smith last week “and after kissing his ring” reminded Avon’s mayor how much his …

'Bitter' Smith Thanks Obstructionists, Gets Last Laugh on Interchange

After thanking those who supported Interchange project, Avon mayor takes obstrucionists to task.

First, he gave thanks to supporters. Then he thanked the "obstructionists" who helped save Avon millions. When Avon Mayor Jim Smith provided his comments at an invitation-only reception for the opening of the I-90 Nagel Interchange on Dec. 20, he first acknowledged those who went above and beyond in making the $27 million project, 16 years in the making, a reality. He also spoke of the difficulties that came from "obstructionists." But first he thanked supporters. “I’d like to thank the team we put together,” Smith said to those in attendance, which included area politicians, business leaders and members of the Ohio Department of Transportation. He credited a finance team with helping save 2 percent by timing the issuing of bonds, which …

“I want to thank everyone who tried to slow down or obstruct or stop the interchange,” Smith said. “If you had not held us up for those couple of years, it probably would have cost us $5 or $6 million more to build." LOL! I am very grateful for the new interchange. Glad it ended up costing less that was predicted.   more ›

16 Years and $27 Million Later, Nagel Road Interchange Opens for Business

10 a.m. ceremony marks the opening of Avon's newest I-90 interchange.

They were all there: Local mayors, including Avon’s Jim Smith and Avon Lake’s Greg Zilka, Sen. Gayle Manning, State Rep. Matt Lundy, project and city engineers,  as well as the day-to-day workers, such as project manager Don Damyanic and ODOT employees, who worked on the Nagel Road Interchange. But at 10:15 a.m. this morning, after Smith and others “cut the ribbon,” all eyes were on the new I-90 Nagel Road Interchange as an All Pro Freight tractor trailer honked its horn and drove down a ramp of the interchange, marking its official opening. Cooperation, for the most part, was the theme of the day as Smith credited the city of Westlake with opening Avon Road, which provided a direct route to the interchange as well as alleviated potential …

Avon Won't Feel Much Pain From State Cuts

New income tax revenue after Cleveland Clinic opens helps cushion the blow

Avon will see less money with Governor John Kasich’s new proposed budget cuts, but the aftermath may not affect Avon much. The first major cut is the tax distribution that all municipalities receive. The money that Avon currently gets from the state goes into a general fund and is not earmarked for any specific program or department. Avon currently receives $313,000 from the state. In 2011, that number will drop to $274,000, and $156,000 in 2012. “This won’t be a huge impact to the city,” said city finance director Bill Logan. “We’ll just spend less somewhere else.” To provide some perspective, the city's revenue budget for 2011, excluding transfers between funds, is $32,059,878. Logan also hopes to make up for the cuts with more income …

Tax-Exemption for All Pro Freight Stadium Affects Avon Schools

District, city await Board of Revision decision

Senate Bill 71 has passed, but the Avon school board may not be too happy with the money they will receive from the new tax-exempt status placed on the All Pro Freight Stadium. Currently, every stadium in the state of Ohio is tax-exempt, with the exception of All Pro Freight Stadium, because the Lake Erie Crushers are not affiliated with a Major League Baseball team. Tax exemption can be a powerful economic development tool. Stadiums bring people into the community – hotels, restaurants, and other entertainment venues see a jump in business. Without a tax-exempt status, teams not affiliated with a major league club could not afford to be created, Avon mayor Jim Smith said. With interest from Sandusky, Mansfield, and Mason to have their own…

I can understand from a business and development point of view the reason for the tax exemption. To attract more business to the city. As a resident I feel that a tax exemption puts more of the cost onto us and a large number of residents are having a hard enough time making ends meet, and now the schools will be asking for more money. Who can I ask for more money to support my household??   more ›

Residents Dealing with Flood Cleanup

Council will discuss issues at special meeting Monday night

Almost a week after torrential rains combined with melting snow to cause flooding to the point where some Avon homes had raw sewage flowing into their basements, residents of those homes are still dealing with the damage. It had already been a rough couple of months for Michael Vuicich. The North Doovys Street resident had undergone a knee replacement operation and spent several weeks at a rehab facility recovering before coming home in February. Then Dutch, the family's 12-year-old dog, was diagnosed with terminal cancer. And now he's facing the clean-up after raw sewage flowed into his basement. While he had a rider on his insurance to cover flooding in the basement, it will only cover $5,000 of damage. Viucich said the damage is already…

It has been very stressful.......especially for my wife. She works full time and also had to find time to deal with the basement flooding problems. This is the third time we have had basement flooding here, but, the first time we have had raw sewage flooding into our basement. To me, it dosn't matter who caused the issue! I live in Avon and pay taxes in Avon.........Please....something needs to …   more ›
