Eight Avon Players Named to All-Ohio Football Team

Justin O'Rourke, Matt Eckhardt lead way with first-team selections

Quarterback Justin O'Rourke and receiver Matt Eckhardt have helped lead Avon High to the OHSAA Division II state final, and now they're leading the Eagles on the Associated Press Division II All-Ohio Team. O'Rourke and Eckhardt were named to the first team. Receiver Greg Harrison, linebacker Matt Tomlin, defensive back Jacob Mullins and punter Adam Horrocks were named to the second team. Loads of Eagles on AP All-District Football Team

Mike Elder also named Coach of the Year

The Associated Press NE Lakes All-District Division II Football Team has a strong Avon presence this year. Ten Eagles players were named to the team, led by quarterback Justin O'Rourke, the Offensive Player of the Year and first-team quarterback. Eagles coach Mike Elder, who has guided the Eagles to an 11-1 record, was named Coach of the Year. Joining O'Rourke on the first team were Ross Douglas (running back), Matt Eckhardt (receiver), Greg Harrison (tight end), Brad Young (kicker), Matt Tomlin (linebacker), Jacob Mullins (defensive back) and Adam Horrocks (punter). Ryan Byrne (offensive lineman) and Jeremiah Burris (defensive lineman) were named to the second team. Avon faces Tiffin Columbian at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the OHSAA Division II …

Eagles start strong with victory over Avon Lake

So much for Avon High's football team having another letdown. Last year, after going 10-0, and finishing the season ranked No. 2 in the AP poll, the Eagles were stunned in the playoffs. For some, it's motivation. For others, it can send a team into a downward spiral, as they ask questions of themselves. Against Avon Lake in the season opener on Thursday night at the Avon Middle School stadium, those thoughts were quelled quickly as the Eagles dominated the Shoremen from start to finish in a 38-7 old-fashioned shellacking. Avon held powerful Avon Lake to just eight first downs, and dominated in time of possession and also yards (382-181).
