The 5K run and one-mile walk is on Saturday at All Pro Freight Stadium.
It's about time to dust off those running shoes and show your support as Neighborhood Alliance brings back their annual 5K runand one-mile family walk Home Run for the Homeless. The event kicks off on Saturday, April 27, at All Pro Freight Stadium. All proceeds from this event will benefit Neighborhood Alliance Haven Center Homeless Shelter, an extended stay homeless shelter in Lorain County serving men, women and children. Right-hander Eric Gonzalez-Diaz pitched against some of Major League Baseball's biggest stars while playing on team Spain in the international baseball tournament.
Lake Erie Crushers' right-hander Eric Gonzalez-Diaz had quite the off-season after being tapped to play for Spain in the 2013 World Baseball Classic. Spain was eliminated after the first round March 10, but Gonzalez-Diaz earned the opportunity to pitch against some of Major League Baseball's biggest all-stars, like: Miguel Cabrera, Yadier Molina, Pablo Sandoval and Elvis Andrus, said Crushers' radio announcer Andy Barch in a press release. “It was an amazing experience for me,” said Gonzalez-Diaz in a prepared statement. “I learned that if you make good pitches, you can get anybody out, but if you make mistakes, especially against the guys I faced, they’re going to make you pay. Mercy has paired up with the Lake Erie Crushers and Avon's All Pro Freight Systems to provide relief to people who were impacted by the destruction of Hurricane Sandy. Mercy will accept canned goods at the Mercy Foundation of Lorain County office at Mercy Regional Medical Center in Lorain, Administration office at Mercy Allen Hospital in Oberlin and Center for Body, Mind and Spirit office at Mercy Cancer Center in Elyria between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 5 through Friday, Nov. 9. Kountis is Reliever of the Year
Three members of the Lake Erie Crushers organization have received post season awards in the Frontier League. Relief Pitcher Jonathan Kountis was named the Reliever of the Year, posting a 0.95 ERA in 38 appearances. The right-handed pitcher from Akron compiled a record of 5-2 while collecting 18 saves and striking out 64 batters to only 19 walks in 56.2 IP. Andy “Bull” Barch, the voice of the Crushers, was also named Broadcaster of the Year. Clubhouse Manager Ryan Maxwell was named “Clubbie” of the Year to round out the postseason awards for the Crushers. The French Creek Family YMCA is partnering with The Lake Erie Crushers this Saturday night, Aug. 11 and hosting a Cornhole Tournament, with all proceeds benefitting the Strong Kids Campaign, the YMCA's fund that helps more than 4,000 family's and kid's throughout the NE Ohio area with membership subsidies. Area baseball fans have the chance at one of the best bargains of the summer. In a surprise move, the Lake Erie Crushers' series against the London Rippers has been moved from London, Ontario, to All Pro Freight Stadium in Avon after the Rippers organization folded. Frontier League commissioner Bill Lee told the London Free Press Tuesday night that the team will go on as a travel team formed by the other team owners. The former Rippers players are free agents and can either stay with the new travel team, or try to get on a roster elsewhere. LifeShare Community Blood Services will be running a blood drive at All Pro Freight Stadium on Friday, July 20 and Saturday, July 21. The Blood Drive will go from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Friday and from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. on Saturday. To help encourage fans to participate in the blood drive, anyone who gives blood will receive two home box ticket vouchers to a future 2012 Crushers game as well as a brand new Crushers hat courtesy of LifeShare Community Blood Services. Also, anyone who gives blood during the drive will be entered to win an Open Air Suite for a 2012 Crushers game. Lake Erie Crushers closer Jonathan Kountis has been chosen by the All-Star coaching staff for the East Division to play in next week’s All Star Game and Festivities. Yesterday, the Frontier League announced that Lake Erie’s Paul Fagan and Russell Moldenhauer will be headed to Normal, IL next week to participate in the All Star Game and Festivities. Kountis has been lights out for the Crushers this season. In 18 appearances, Kountis has given up just 2 earned runs on the season. He has 30 strikeouts in 27.1 innings pitched, and ranks fourth in the Frontier League with eight saves. Kountis has faced 111 batters on the season, only 15 of which have gotten at hit. Two Lake Erie Crushers players will be participating in the 2012 Frontier League All-Star Festivities July 10-11 in Normal, IL. Starting pitcher Paul Fagan has made the All-Star roster for the first time since 2009. Fagan has been the ace of the Lake Erie rotation in 2012, posting a 4-3 record in 10 starts so far this season. He currently ranks 8th in the Frontier League with a 2.63 ERA, second in innings pitched with 65.0 and 10th in strikeouts with 42. Fagan has been the anchor of the Lake Erie pitching staff which currently ranks second in the league in ERA with a 3.69 team ERA.
