Two local students earned scholarship money in the Maltz Museum Stop the Hate Essay Contest.
Two Learwood Middle School students are among the three finalists in the “Stop the Hate” contest. Learwood students Noah Rish and Lexee Dalgleish, both in 7th grade, landed among the top three finalists for their essays to stop hatred, as part of the 5th annual Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage Stop the Hate: Youth Speak Out! contest. Avon Lake student Andrea Bestor won $50,000 in 2010.
Learwood Middle School, known for producing strong writers, has two finalists in the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage's fifth Stop the Hate: Youth Speak Out! essay contest. Lexee Dalgleish and Noah Rish, both seventh-graders at Learwood Middle School are finalists. They will be honored May 2 at Severance Hall. They represent two of 15 finalists in grades 6-12. More than 1,600 students in seven counties submitted essays. In 2008, the the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage created a contest to encourage middle and high school students to focus attention on the corrosive effects of hatred, discrimination and intolerance while developing critical thinking, problem solving and communication skills. Members of the Avon Lake American Legion Post 211 helped remember those who lost their lives Dec. 7, 1941 at Pearl Harbor. Members led Learwood Middle School students in a ceremony that included a reading by eighth-grader Caleb Otts, who read the events of Pearl Harbor Day to other Learwood students and a three-round volley.
