Seniors Coleman, Kauffman combine for 38 points in loss.
The Avon Eagles started off strong, but couldn’t hold off Padua en route to losing a heartbreaker to the Bruins, 71-67, Saturday night. “Obviously you never want to lose any game, especially in the tournament and have our season end a lot quicker then what we would of like for it to,” said Eagles head coach Jim Baker. “We had a 14-win season and this team should be proud of what they accomplished. The seniors are a great group and it’s disappointing it’s ending tonight.” Both teams showcased standouts senior players in this Division II District tournament game held at Westlake High School. Marvin Coleman of Avon and Padua’s Kyle Tomko, both leaders for their teams, played as though they were not ready for their high school basketball …

Coleman's 18 points lead Eagles to 58-44 victory over Firelands
It was a night to remember for the Avon High School boys basketball team on Friday. After the fun festivities of Senior Night, the Eagles took the court and defeated Firelands, 58-44. The seniors and their families will long remember being introduced to the crowd before the game. Years from now, they will still hear the cheers. Coach Jim Baker hopes they also remember for a few weeks the way the Eagles got a little complacent after building a 32-11 halftime lead. They were outscored, 24-11, in the third quarter as the Falcons began hitting some shots and made a game of it. "It wasn't one of our best performances, but I'd prefer to think of this game as a night of honoring our seniors and having a little fun," Baker said. "Once we got that …

Gray scores 21 to lead Eagles past Fairview, 73-36
Watching the Avon High School boys basketball team when it is on its game, you get the feeling this could be a special season. The Eagles were flying to the ball on defense and shooting well on offense Friday night in a 73-36 win at Fairview Park that was a joy to watch -- if you were an Avon fan. Even Fairview fans applauded some of the Eagles' baskets, they were so entertaining. Junior Claude Gray scored 21 points and senior Marvin Coleman had 16 to lead the way. Both played a little more than 2 1/2 quarters as the Eagles overcame an 11-10 deficit to outscore the overmatched Warriors 63-25 over the final 28 minutes. "You always can do better," veteran Avon coach Jim Baker said. "They did a nice job tonight and should feel good about it, …

Boys basketball team now 7-1 in West Shore Conference (10-3 overall)
Avon’s boys’ basketball team took another step closer to winning its first conference championship in two decades with a convincing 69-37 win Tuesday night at home against West Shore Conference rival North Ridgeville. The Eagles (10-3 overall, 7-1 WSC) looked like a well-oiled machine, playing aggressive defense and receiving balanced scoring from the senior tandem of Marvin Coleman (20 points) and R.J. Kauffman (17). For Coleman, this game was another step towards fulfilling team goals set at the start of the season. “We had three goals for this season. The first one was to win the Holiday tournament, which we did. Now we have to win the conference and district,” he said. The game didn’t start off exactly the way Avon coach Jim Baker had …

Claude Gray scores 21 and R.J. Kauffman nets 20 in Eagles victory
Avon High used a 15-point run to end the third quarter and begin the fourth to power its way to a 69-61 win over visiting Bay on Friday night in West Shore Conference boys basketball. The Eagles, who moved to 6-1 in the WSC and 9-3 overall, were led by junior Claude Gray with 21 points including six in the run that boosted Avon from a 41-40 lead out to a 57-40 advantage that put the game away. "We got some stops and Bay was unlucky on some shots in that stretch that just didn't fall," said Avon coach Jim Baker, whose team took a half-game ahead of Rocky River in the WSC race. The Eagles are home Tuesday against North Ridgeville and are on the road Friday at Fairview. The 15-point run moved the Eagles out of a nip and tuck battle in a game …

Shoremen take on Eagles, who prove to be formidable opponents
The state basketball playoffs are a month away, but on Tuesday night when Avon Lake and Avon clashed with each other, one might have been taking a look at the calendar. True, there was a theme, as both Avon Lake coach Eric Smith and Avon coach Jim Baker donned tennis shoes as part of the sneakers for cancer and proceeds from the game were going to the American Cancer Society. And some might be saying, “The nights the lights went out in Avon Lake, after a delay of the game when the lights went out for nearly 15 minutes. In the end, the Shoremen prevailed, taking home a 70-61 win. The team remains undefeated, while the Eagles fell to 8-3 on the year. “That was two great basketball teams out there and for a game 10 of the season, this was a …

Senior guard R.J. Kaufmann stands out in wins over Keystone, Clearview
It's always good when you are the host of a holiday tournament, but even better to take part in and win the tourney's championship game. That's exactly what the Avon Eagles did Wednesday night when they defeated Clearview, 48-42, to win the Avon Holiday Tournament. Guard R.J. Kaufmann scored a game-high 16 points and forward Marvin Coleman added 11 points to led Avon's winning effort. The Eagles senior scored 10 of his 16 points from the free throw line to help Avon (6-1) jump out to a 12-point lead (42-30) entering the final quarter. Kaufmann also starred in Avon's 70-59 win over Keystone on December 27 to advance to the championship game, scoring 30 points after a five-day layoff. Despite the low-scoring game, Avon coach Jim Baker had…
