Call #677 To Report Drunks, Ohio State Patrol Says

17 people killed in Ohio during the 2011 Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

In anticipation of increased traffic during the Thanksgiving holiday, the Ohio State Highway Patrol is reminding the drivers of the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. Last year during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, 17 people were killed on Ohio’s roadways with 30 percent related to impaired driving. Last year 27 people were killed due to impaired driving between the Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve Holidays. AAA predicts 43.6 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles from home over the holiday, up just 0.7 percent from last year. Video Highlights Need For Safe Thanksgiving Driving

Last Thanksgiving 10 people were killed on Ohio roadways.

Last year during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, 10 people were killed on Ohio’s roadways with 30 percent related to impaired driving. Each year nearly 39 people are killed due to impaired driving between the Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve Holidays. Ohio and Avon Lake safety forces don't want you to become one of the statistics. "Especially this weekend, more people are out and about," Avon Lake Police Lt. Duane Streator said. "It's very important for the safety of everyone on the road." Streator said that generally there's an increase in drunk driving on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and on St. Patrick's Day. Ohio Police, U.S. Coast Guard Are Out in Force to Stop Drunk Drivers This Holiday

State and local police have increased their patrols to seek out drunk drivers.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is warning you: Don't get behind the wheel impaired this holiday weekend.  Because the Fourth of July weekend is traditionally a dangerous period on roads, police are out in force to stop people from driving under the influence. Last Fourth of July, state troopers arrested 611 drivers for driving under the influence.  “Driving impaired or riding with someone who is impaired is not worth the risk," said Colonel John Born, superintendent of the Ohio State Highway Patrol. "The consequences are serious and real. Not only do you risk killing yourself or someone else, but the trauma and financial costs of a crash or an arrest for driving while impaired can be really significant."
