The pizza wars will soon be heating up in Avon as Antonio’s Pizza is planning to open a location in City Centre, next to Marc’s, by the end of the year. Longtime Cleveland-area residents may be familiar with the company as Antonio’s Pizza has been family-owned and operated since 1967. Now over 43 years and three generations later, Antonio's has expanded to eight locations, including Westlake and the new Avon site. After moving across the street, the new Stop 45 has an upscale but casual new look and a nice wine selection.
Visitors to the “new” Stop 45 Tavern & Wine Bar restaurant have almost the same reaction after stepping through the front door of what looks like a relatively small establishment: Wow. Who knew this was in here? From the outside, the white one-story building that formerly housed Michael’s Ice Cream at 153 Lear Road is almost hidden, but walk through the door and you’ll find an expansive space that has two bars, plenty of tables, an inviting fireplace and a jukebox with favorite tunes. The restaurant was expanded and owner Tom Curry, who ran the Stop 45 Tavern across Lear Road (now The Quarry), has remodeled the restaurant. Thursday's Rotary Pizza Bake-Off is an all-you-can-eat pizzafest.
Everyone loves pizza. That may be why the annual Avon/Avon Lake Rotary Great Pizza Bake-Off has become one of the hottest homecoming weekend events in Avon Lake. Admission to the Sept. 29 all-you-can-eat Great Pizza Bake-Off, held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Avon Lake High School Commons, is $10 for adults and $5 for children under 12 years of age. Tickets are sold at the door. More than 700 pizza enthusiasts attended the 2010 bake-off, according to Frank Krempasky, treasurer of the Avon/Avon Lake Rotary Foundation. “It’s fun for both adults and children. Pizza Rak is dishing up the pies from a wood-fired oven
If you're looking for something new to try this weekend, head on down Detroit Avenue. Pizza Rak has opened for business. Pizza Rak is part of Whistler's Ice Cream Shop. Owners Nick and Theresa Rak built an addition onto the 1930s building, once an auto shop, to accommodate a wood-burning pizza oven. Nick, an Avon firefighter, did much of the work himself. The Raks said they did a "very soft" opening on Wednesday and are getting into the swing of things. Right now, pizzas are available after 5 p.m. Closing time is 9 p.m. on weeknights, 10 p.m. on weekends. The pizzas start at $10.85 for a medium size and $12.85 for a large. Noted ice cream stand adding pizza to the menu
AVON -- There's very little screaming for ice cream in December. That can make business slow this time of year at Whistler's Ice Cream Shop on Detroit Road by Olde Avon Village. So owners Nick and Theresa Rak are expanding the business to include a dish that's loved all year round. Work continues inside the shop to finish the new kitchen space complete with a wood-fired pizza oven. The pizza part of the business will be called the Pizza Rak. Adding on to the existing 1930s building, originally an auto shop called Casper's Garage, was done as part of repairs the building needed after it was hit by car in late 2009.
