Once again, Breakfast with the Bunny was a smash hit at the Post 211 American Legion Hall Hundreds turned out for the 14th Annual Breakfast with the Easter Bunny. The breakfast, sponsored by the Avon Lake Recreation Department, held two sessions March 23 to accommodate the more than 100 children who came to see the bunny.

Ralph Joseph Matysiak, 88, of Avon, passed away on March 16, 2013, at St. John Medical Center in Westlake.He was born Oct. 5, 1924 in Lorain. Ralph grew up in Brooklyn, New York and Lorain, but lived in Lorain for most of his life until moving to Avon in 1988, where he resided for 21 years. He spent the last four years at West Bay Nursing Facility in Westlake, where he made many friends that he considered extended family. He graduated from Lorain High School in 1942 and was drafted into the Army in 1943, where he attended the ASTP program at the University of Pennsylvania, he then was assigned to the 3093 Refrigeration Company, Butcher Platoon. After attending language school in Monterey, California, he was assigned as a cook for a …

In a show of support for U.S. military forces, Avon Lake American Legion Post 211 donated food for a “send off party” Jan. 23. Approximately 100 members of the Ohio National Guard’s 837th Engineer Mobile Augmentation Company enjoyed the outing, held at the VFW Post 451 in Lorain. The 837th is stationed at the National Guard Armory on Grove Avenue in south Lorain and members are being deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom on Jan. 28. The 837th is made up of soldiers from all over Ohio and has been training for this deployment since they were notified in November 2011 they would be deployed. Members will travel to Fort Bliss, TX and then to a classified location in Afghanistan. They are expected to remain in …

For the second time in three years, an Eagle Scout candidate has chosen to improve public land in Avon Lake, and was rewarded with Scouting's highest honor. Adam Litzler, a 17-year-old junior at Avon Lake High School and a member of Avon Lake Boy Scout Troop 334, has been awarded with the highest rank within the Boy Scouts of America – Eagle Scout. To earn this rank, Litzler arned more than 21 badges, held various leadership positions within his Troop, and completed a large-scale community service project in Avon Lake. His ceremony--or Court of Honor -- was held Jan. 19 at Avon Lake's American Legion Post 211, but he was "official" in December 2012. Ceremony marks anniversary of Pearl Harbor attacks.
Members of the Avon Lake American Legion Post 211 helped remember those who lost their lives Dec. 7, 1941 at Pearl Harbor. Members led Learwood Middle School students in a ceremony that included a reading by eighth-grader Caleb Otts, who read the events of Pearl Harbor Day to other Learwood students and a three-round volley. Avon Lake councilman helps lead Honor Guard for Corporal Clarence Huff Jr.
Returning a soldier’s remains home is never easy, but paying respects after more than 62 years after missing in action is an honor members of Avon Lake’s American Legion Post 211 Honor Guard has carried out twice in two months. The Post 211 Honor Guard and a contingent of US Marine Corps personnel greeted the return of the remains of Marine Corporal Clarence H. "Bud" Huff Jr. on Aug. 14, 2012 at Cleveland Hopkins Airport. Huff was reported killed in action on Dec. 2, 1950 in the Battle at Chosin Reservoir, Korea. His body was never recovered. The Post’s Color Guard also was present on July 8 when the remains of Army corporal Pryor Gobble, whose next of kin lives in Mentor, arrived home.
