Editor’s note: Are you a business helping out or a resident who has a helpful tip? Add it to comments and we’ll include it in the story as well. It’s no secret: Many people in Avon Lake, one of the hardest hit communities in Northeast Ohio by the aftereffects of Hurricane Sandy, have been using the Internet, including Avon-Avon Lake Patch’s Facebook page, as a source of communication to get through the week. Businesses have been emailing and posting where to get help on our Facebook page, as have city leaders. On Nov. 1, at 11 a.m. , Councilwoman Jennifer Fenderbosch posted on our Facebook page that the city of Avon Lake has just learned there may be some residents in Avon Lake without power through Monday, Nov. 5. Updated: Click here to read what to do if you may need shelter this week. Time sensitive. FirstEnergy Representative Mark Durbin said that Avon Lake was one of the hardest hit communities in Northeast Ohio following Monday's storm and his company’s goal was to have most power restored by Saturday morning or 6 p.m. on Sunday. More than 5,000 customers lost power in Avon Lake. “Our goal is the weekend if not sooner,” Durbin said. “We’re trying to refine restoration.” A notation on FirstEnergy's "storm restoration" page said the majority of Lorain County customers are "expected to be restored by noon on Friday, November 2." Some areas of Avon Lake have already been restored and Durbin credited that to an area that crews could get to and get …

Code Red issued, police urging to avoid all travel.
A large tree that fell across Walker Road, landing on a car around 4 p.m. has closed a portion of Walker Road. The tree also dislodged at least one power line. High winds are considered the probable cause. The driver of the vehicle was able to exit the car and reportedly not injured, Avon Lake Lt. Duane Streator said. The roadway is currently impassable. Walker Road remains closed between Jaycox Road and Legends Row. Streator said there was no time frame as to when it might open. Streator said there were live wires across the road when the tree initially fell. "We issued a Code Red and are asking people, similar to a severe winter weather alert, to avoid travel," Streator said. Code Red, the reverse 9-1-1 system, will send out urgent …
FirstEnergy preparing for outages across the area as high winds are expected to gust for roughly 24 hours.
Hurricane Sandy could cause power outages beginning tonight and into tomorrow evening in Northeast Ohio, a FirstEnergy spokesperson said. The hurricane is expected to bring strong winds to all of Northeast Ohio for a roughly 24-hour period beginning this evening. Crews have been sent from Ohio to the East Coast, where damage is expected to be more severe and widespread, spokesperson Mark Durbin said, but crews in Northeast Ohio are fully equipped to respond the storm. More coverage: Hurricane Sandy in Northeast Ohio “We would not have sent those crews if we didn’t think we had adequate staffing here to deal with outages,” Durbin added. Though the company is not in “storm mode” yet, crews in Northeast Ohio have been told to prepare for …
Here are guidelines from the USDA regarding the safety of food in a refrigerator without power.
With Hurricane Sandy predicted to bring high winds and power outages to Northeast Ohio today, food safety is a concern. The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service prepared a fact sheet for keeping food safe during an emergency, including losing power. The USDA says to "keep the refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible to maintain the cold temperature." But the refrigerator will only keep food safely cold for about four hours if unopened during a power outage, according to the USDA. A full freezer will hold the temperature for about 48 hours if full (24 hours of half full), the USDA says. The USDA emphasizes "never to taste food to determine its safety" and says that you should "evaluate each item separately." Generally…
