School District Will Receive $1.5 Million Owed In the Next Week

Auditor's office will forward funds due in March.

Avon Lake School District’s books will balance out for the 2013 fiscal year. A day after Avon-Avon Lake Patch reported that a late $1.5 million tax bill due by NRG/GenOn Energy was late, the Lorain County Auditor’s Office said it will forward funds. “The County Auditor’s Office called and has approved the district’s request for a tax advance,” Avon Lake School District treasurer Autumn Streng said April 4. “The funds should be received next week and will be reflected in the (Fiscal Year 2013) revenue line item for Tangible Personal Property Tax.” The school district’s fiscal year runs from August to August. Had the auditor’s office not advanced the money by mid June, the Fiscal Year (FY) 2013 budget would have shown a deficit of the $1.5 …

Schools Move Spring Breaks Away From Easter Holiday

If you're looking to plan spring break for the 2013-14, here's a heads up. Local districts are not scheduling them for Easter week that year. The Avon and Avon Lake school districts has opted to move spring break for the 2013-14 year away from the traditional Easter weekend to avoid conflicts with Ohio Achievement Testing that year “We typically have a spring break aligned with the Easter holiday,” AvonSuperintendent of Schools Mike Laub said. Spring break will start on March 24, 2014, which marks the end of the third quarter. Easter is on April 20. "The 21st of April would have been the start of spring break,” Laub said. “Break would have started during the first week of testing.” Since the state only allows a few weeks of testing, not …

Avon and Avon Lake are consistently Excellent and/or Excellent with Distinction. So I would like to know what is "make-up" testing ? Is it due to absence or for testing second chances ? When schools are achieving the highest state ratings now the excuse to avoid Easter holiday conflict does not pass the "smell" test.   more ›

The school district has passed every year for many years creating ALSD to become one of the top school districts in America along with the Middle School and High School being awarded Blue Ribbon Schools. School District Opts for 9.04-Mill November Levy

"Average" homeowner would pay $641.64 more per year.

The Avon Lake School District has opted to place a 9.04-mill 5-year emergency “new money” levy on the November ballot, citing a critical need for funding in the wake of several income reductions. The Board of Education approved the approximate 9-mill option over the 6-mill option at the Aug. 7 Board of Education meeting. If passed by a majority vote in November, electors can expect to pay a tax increase of $276.88 per $100,000 of home valuation starting January of 2013, School Treasurer Autumn Streng said. The levy, if approved, would generate an additional $7.5 million annually for the school district. The average home in Avon Lake, per the Lorain County Auditor, is $231,737. “That means it would cost the average homeowner $641.64 (more) …

Have read just about all of the comments and almost have to laugh. My kids went through the Avon Lake School system and in all those years I can't remember the school board asking for a levy of this magnitude. Now in my senior years (incidentally it seems to some people we don't exist and that it's all about newbies) after spending all of my money raising the family and paying off the mortgage …   more ›

Avon Lake School District Eyeing November 'New Money' Levy

Financial blows to district may mean a 6- or 9-mill levy

The Avon Lake School District has forwarded two levy options to the Lorain County Auditor’s Office to determine millage for a possible November vote. After reviewing results from the Paul Fallon Community Survey (result will be shared on Thursday), the district decided to have millage determined for a 5 year Emergency levy that would collect either $5 million or $7.5 million per year. “We sent both to (County Auditor) Mark Stewart to determine millage,” Superintendent of Schools, Bob Scott, said. Which levy, if either, will be forwarded for a vote will be decided at an Aug. 7 school board meeting. Levy requests must be submitted no later than Aug. 8 for the November General Election. Scott said the survey showed a solid support for the …
