Arming Teachers, Guards in Buildings? What are Your Thoughts?

Armed guard and teachers, metal detectors discussed at Avon school forum

A healthy number of parents turned out for the Feb. 5 meeting at Avon High School to discuss safety in Avon schools. The open forum gave those in attendance the opportunity to ask questions. “Are we doing enough? Are we not doing enough,” Superintendent of Schools Michael Laub, asked. Laub, who has been superintendent for seven months said he realized immediately there were good safety procedure in place. He credited, in part, Principal Kristina Dobos-Buller with working with police about procedures. Laub noted there were “a lot of different opinions on what is safety,” and the audience agrees.   Audience suggestions included armed guards at the entryway of buildings, armed guards in schools and cameras. “None of those ideas are horrible …

School Safety on the Forefront: Feb. 5 Forum Open to Public

Police, school administrators will answer question, lead discussion

The Avon Local School District is hosting a school safety forum open to the public on Feb. 5, from 7 p.m. – 8 p.m. Parents/guardians at all schools have been notified. The forum, held at Avon High School’s auditorium, is an opportunity for police and school administrators to  have an open conversation about school safety and where the district stands on the issue. The Avon Police Department as well as district administration will be in attendance to field questions, concerns and ideas. “We will be in attendance to answer any questions that we feel that we can relating to school safety and listen to any suggestions or comments which may come forward from community members,” Avon Police Chief Richard Bosley said. “We will also have a handout…

Avon, Avon Lake Schools Have Safety Plans in Place

Avon sends out tips for helping children deal with tragedy.

Although information has now been released that the gunman in the Newtown school shootings gained entry to Sandy Hook elementary school by force, bypassing a newly installed security system, the human element is being credited for possibly saving the lives of many others during the massacre. A custodian ran through the halls alerting teachers and administrators of a “gunman on the loose” as someone else turned on an intercom so teachers could hear the chaos and take defensive measures. It worked; teachers are being credited with saving lives after they hustled students into closets and bathrooms. “Diligence is still the best defense any school has to avoid this type of situation,” Avon Lake Superintendent of Schools Bob Scott, who called …
