Spent 28 years working for Greyhound.
Bernard H. Johnson Sr., age 85, of Avon, passed away suddenly on Feb. 4, 2013 at Metro Health Medical Center. He was born on Dec. 16, 1927 in Hartwell, WV and had been a resident of Avon for the past 16 years, moving from Lorain. He served in the US Army and received the WWII Victory Medal. Bernard worked as a bus driver for Greyhound for 28 years, retiring in 1985. He previously worked for B & O Railroad in West Virginia. Bernard loved the great outdoors including hunting, fishing, camping and gardening. He also enjoyed traveling and wood-working. Theresa M. Horwedel, (nee Forthofer) 84, of Avon Lake, passed away, Saturday, November 24, 2012 at home in the company of her loving family. She was a lifelong resident of Avon and Avon Lake. The wife of the late Lester "Bud" Horwedel of Avon Lake and daughter of Sophia (Oster) and Jacob Forthofer, she was one of eight brothers and sisters. Her parents were the forefather pioneers in the early settlement of Avon. She is preceded in death by siblings Ralph Forthofer-Elyria, Ollie Forthofer-Avon, Dorothy Forthofer-Avon, Rosella (Forthofer) Walker and granddaughter Megan McGinnis. Louise Caruso (Gallagher), 91, of Avon Lake, passed away on Aug. 28, 2012 surrounded by family. She was born on Jan. 5, 1921 in Greensburg, PA. Funeral Service: Tuesday, Sept. 4 at 11 a.m. at St. Justin Martyr, Stevens Boulevard, Eastlake. Louise was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and sister who will be dearly missed. She is survived by her sons Robert G. (Robin), Ralph L. (Lisa), and Anthony R. These five students will head the 115-member high school key club.
The Avon Lake Key Club, one of the largest organizations at the high school, inducted its new officers on March 31. This year’s officers are Molly Clarahan, president; Julia Sant, vice president; ; Maddie Furrier, secretary; Alyssa Wagner, bulletin editor and Sam Shalov, treasurer. The induction ceremony was held during the weekly meeting of the Avon Lake Kiwanis Club. Kiwanis Club representative Kyle Maurer and Key Club Adviser Gjergj Haxhiu introduced the students and their expected duties. The ceremony preceded the annual State of the City address give by Mayor K. C. Zuber. The club is the high school branch of the Kiwanis Club and boasts 115 students dedicated to service.
