Writer says impact is immediate, long-standing and life-saving.
With every election season comes a bombardment of information regarding candidates and issues. Most choices are portrayed in stark terms with drastic consequences to follow if a candidate or issue is not supported. However, a real contrast is present with Avon Lake Issue 10 or “the paramedic levy.” At stake is whether emergency medical services are available to resuscitate the heart attack victim, stop the bleeding of the injured motorist, or provide life-saving transportation for the sick or injured child. Issue 10 is about assuring emergency medical services are there for us. Without Issue 10, we are taking a gamble on the lives and well-being of our families. Without Issue 10 we are taking the risk that if and when emergency medical …

District hopes third time is the charm for middle school levy.
The Avon School Board unanimously approved a motion that would place a “no new tax” $32 million, 2.34-mill bond issue on the November General Election ballot. It marks the third time in the past 12 months the district has sought a $32 million levy. Unlike the first two, in November of 2011 and March of 2012, passage of this levy will not result in a tax increase. Both previous attempts narrowly failed. If approved, the 28-year levy would generate enough funds to build a new Avon Middle School that would be finished by the 2014-15 school year. The school would be built on a 46-acre property the district already owns on Long Road. District treasurer Kent Zeman said if approved by voters, taxpayers would not see an increase in taxes, but a …

Last-minute local filers sweat it out but get to the window just under the deadline
With all the on-line tax preparation programs that allow you to file your taxes from the comforts of your own home, you’d figure there would be precious few people rushing to the Avon Post Office at the last minute to file their taxes just before Tuesday’s deadline. Some things never change, apparently. On Tuesday, the Avon Post Office closed at its usual 5:30 p.m. time and didn’t have extended hours to accommodate supremely late arrivers. As you might imagine, the office’s modest-sized parking lot got its share of attention at sundown. So what kept them so long, despite having an extra day or two to file taxes this year? Ah, well, you know … um, procrastination. Debi Morales, who once lived in Avon but resides in LaGrange, has a refund …

Identity theft, phishing and other frauds
The Internal Revenue Service has released its annual “Dirty Dozen” ranking of tax scams, reminding taxpayers to use caution during tax season to protect themselves against a wide range of schemes ranging from identity theft to return preparer fraud. The Dirty Dozen listing, compiled by the IRS each year, lists a variety of common scams taxpayers can encounter at any point during the year. But many of these schemes peak during filing season as people prepare their tax returns. Identity Theft Topping this year’s list Dirty Dozen list is identity theft. Identity theft cases are among the most complex ones the IRS handles, but the agency is committed to working with taxpayers who have become victims of identity theft. The IRS is …

Resident opposes building new middle school
Hello Avon School Board Members. Here is a thought: How about saving the taxpayers of this community $12,000,000 and just renovating the current middle school? Why is it so easy for bureaucrats to take our money and spend it like it's Christmas every day? Nick Hryszczenko Avon

Issue10Support - I agree, it's a small amount. The point here is, from the mayor's article, if it doesn't pass, the city could cut some other area's. Some (most) are item's I am good with doing without. Issue 10 is not what I am worried about. It is: Paramed (10): + .75 increase 70 / 100k Schools (32): + 9.04 increase 265 / 100k 911 (50): + .50 increase 47 / 100k Mental Health (49): renewal / …   more ›
