UPDATED April 15, 1:43 pm The city of Avon is reporting there will be no trash pickup April 15 and 16, however Republic Services Area Marketing Manager David Kidder said it wasn't definite yet. "Tomorrow is still a questions mark,” Kidder said Monday afternoon. “Does it look real good we’re going to pick up tomorrow? No. I don’t know that 100 percent at this point." Replacement drivers are currently picking up "emergency pickup" for hospitals and schools. Trash on the curb may need to be brought back in. UPDATED 2:16 p.m- Trash will be picked up Tuesday, April 2. The regular trash schedule will resume next Monday. It's not a joke: If you put out trash in Avon and Avon Lake expecting a Monday pickup, take it off your treelawn. Avon and Avon Lake Republic Waste customers won't have their trash picked up Monday, April 1 because of a strike. Republic Area Marketing Manager Dave Kidder said workers went out on strike as on midnight Monday, April 1 that affects all of Lorain County. Republic Waste workers, who belong to the Teamsters, are picketing at the Elyria trucking company. Red Cross calls strike "unconscionable"
Members of Teamsters Local 507 are picketing at the Avon American Red Cross collection center on Center Road as they continue their strike against the American Red Cross Northern Ohio Blood Services Region, which started on Tuesday. About a dozen picketers were walking the sidewalk along the west side of Center Street on Wednesday afternoon. Several passing cars and trucks honked, waved and gave thumbs-up to the picketers. One man pulled into the parking lot and talked with two of the picketers to find out more. The Avon Red Cross center was closed on Wednesday.
