Thanksgiving is almost here. Tell us what you’re thankful for in the comments.
Sure, there’s the turkey and pumpkin pie. And there’s football for sports fans and parades for the kids and early morning shopping for the deal-seekers. But Thanksgiving is also a day about reflection. It’s a day to stop and think about all the good in our lives. So we want to know: when all is said and done, what are you giving thanks for this year? It can be silly or sweet, simple or profound. We just want to hear it. Here are a few responses from Patch readers in the region. Check them out, and then tell us what you’re grateful for in the comments. Dawn Blythe of Jackson Township said: “I'm thankful for a husband who provides so I can be a stay at home mom! The event has become a major fundraiser for the Karen P. The overall winner was 40-year-old Fred Kieser of Cleveland, with a time of 15:28.3. The first-place finisher in the female division was Melissa Rittenhouse of Sheffield Lake, with a time of 18:59.6. “I had to do my workout today anyways, so I figured why not come do this,” said Rittenhouse, 35, who also finished first among …

It wouldn’t be Thanksgiving in Avon without the Turkey Dash. The 8th Annual Turkey Dash, a Thanksgiving-morning 5K run/walk, begins at 9 a.m. at Avon High School, and will raise money for the Karen P. Nakon Breast Cancer Foundation to provide need-based financial aid to women undergoing breast cancer treatments. Stacey Rusher, administrator at the foundation, said she expects about 1,200 Turkey-Day trotters this year. “We’ll probably net about $25,000 for this race,” she said. The race was started in 2004 by friends of Nakon – who lived in the Red Tail neighborhood and was diagnosed with breast cancer when she was pregnant with her third child – as a way to honor her after her death in 2003. That first year, Rusher said about 85 runners …

Some national retail stores are moving the annual shopping spectacle to late Thursday night.
If Black Friday starts any earlier, it will be Black Thursday. Several big retail chains in Avon, including Best Buy, Kohl’s, Old Navy and Target, are kicking off the annual day-after-Thanksgiving shopping holiday at 12 a.m. Friday. Wal-Mart is beginning its door-buster deals at 10 p.m. on Thanksgiving night. “We need to keep our foot in the door with our competition,” said a customer service manager at Kohl’s in Avon Commons who wished not to be identified. Caribou Coffee is taking it a step further. “This year we’ll be opening at 11:30 p.m. on Thursday,” said Shannon Masters, store manager. Masters said Black Friday is always the highest grossing sales day at the store, which was pushed to open on Thursday this year after the big-box …

Local businesses are ready to make your Turkey Day special
How would you like a former NFL star to help make your Thanksgiving dinner? You can, and stay right in Avon for it. Al "Bubba" Baker, former Browns (among other teams) defensive lineman, owns Bubba's Q on Center Road. And he's selling whole smoked turkeys for the holidays, along with other treats. Baker said the 22-pound turkeys are given a spice rub, then are sealed in food bags so the spices can penetrate the meat. The turkey is smoked for about six hours. Preparing one of his turkeys takes three days, Baker said. Turkeys are $64.99 each. They must be ordered by Tuesday, Nov. 22. You can pick them up before 9 p.m. on Nov. 23. Bubba's Q is closed on Thanksgiving. Looking for sides? You can give yourself (and your stove) a break with sides…
