The Avon Branch Library Teen Volunteer Group is hosting the Community Read-A-Thon in celebration of National Library Week (April 14 - 20) that will include a number of respected community members reading from their favorite books. Guest readers include Michael Laub, Avon schools superintendent, a school board member, a principal and various other people who work in schools. Also scheduled to read are a doctor and a Cub Scout leader. Avon City Council members Mary Berges and Daniel Urban are taking time out of their weekend to share, as well. Cleveland Metroparks Chalet will have special hours on holiday
The Chalet Toboggan Chutes will have special hours on Martin Luther King Jr. Day Jan. 21. The chutes, located in the Cleveland Metroparks' Mill Stream Run Reservation in Strongsville, will be open noon to 5 p.m. Regular hours at the chutes are: Daily admission for tobogganing is $10 for adults and $8 for children 11 and under. One-time ride tickets are available for $4. Group discounts during public hours are available. This year, a newly installed lift takes toboggans to the top of the hill so riders no longer have to carry them up. The twin refrigerated ice chutes start with an initial drop of 70 feet, traveling over 700 feet of ice at more than 45 mph. All riders must wear gloves or mittens. Fireworks are July 3 and July 4 this year.
Avon and Avon Lake are readying for Fourth of July festivities. And with fireworks held on consecutive nights, residents in both communities can catch two days of celebrations. Not enough fireworks? At deadline, there were 312 firework shows scheduled for Ohio. The city of Avon will be hosting a “two for one” Fourth of July event. Baseball fans can take in the Lake Erie Crushers game as they take on the London Rippers on Wednesday, July 4. After the game at All Pro Freight Stadium, visitors will be treated to a fireworks display. The city and team will be sharing the costs of the fireworks.
