ALHS's Connor Musial Constructs Cross Country Trail as Scout Project

Connor Musial leads project to finish 1/2-mile cross country course near high school

An Avon Lake High School student athlete combined his love for cross country sports and his commitment to scouting in a way that benefits the entire community. Connor Musial, one of the team captains for the Avon Lake High School boys cross country team, completed his Boy Scout Eagle project  by coordinating a team of volunteers to build a new half-mile cross country running course through the woods on the east end of the high school grounds.  Musial is a member of Scout Troop 334, out of the Lake Shore United Methodist Church on Electric Boulevard in Avon Lake. “I knew the high school track coach wanted to put a new track in back of the high school property for a long time,” Musial said. “When he started looking into the process this year…

From Overweight To States: Matt Marron Finds Success on the Track

After topping out as a 210 lb. eighth grader, Matt Marron shed the pounds and gained a passion

Sometimes the path to success doesn't take so quite a direct path.  In the case of Avon Lake standout distance runner Matt Marron, that couldn't be closer to the truth. Like most youths in Avon Lake, Marron wanted to play football and be a part of that great Shoremen tradition. From fifth to ninth grade he was living that dream, donning the pads as a football center. Marron though, had a vision. While he liked the camaraderie of the team sport, he wasn't happy with himself. At 210 pounds in the eighth grade, he didn't like where he was heading. So at that young age he made a choice to tackle a problem many face later in life. "One day I decided that I was sick of being a lineman, and sick of looking at myself in the mirror and thinking …

Avon Lake’s Lancione Reflects on Medal Performance at States

Finishes race after competitor falls into his lane.

Avon Lake's Peter Lancione joined a small select group of Ohio athletes when he reached the podium for hurdles at the 2011 OHSAA track and field championships the weekend of June 4-5. Lancione placed fourth in the 300 hurdles. "I went down there just trying to do my best," Lancione said. "So coming back with a medal is a little surprising for me, but it feels great." In a meet, which not only is the state's oldest championships (1908) but also over the years has boasted some of the world’s track elite, including Edwin Moses, Harrison Dilliard and Jesse Owens, Lancione was amazed at the atmosphere. "When you come around the corner on that home stretch, its unbelievable how loud it gets," he said. "And then when you are on the podium, and …

Four Avon Lake Girls, Two Boys Advance to States

Christine Bohan, Nick Bossard, Pete Lancione, Katie Link, Morgan Srail and Kristen Winkel heading to Columbus.

Kristen Winkel never stopped running after her race. From the podium, she ran straight to the stands where she hugged her mom, and both shed tears. For Morgan Srail, it was more of the same. After her event, she dashed across the track and jumped into her fathers arms, in exuberance. Nick Bossard and Pete Lancione hugged each other and gave each other a high five, and were on cloud nine, while Katie Link was smiles from ear to ear after her race. The reason was simple. On a cool night at Amherst Richard Cooley stadium, each Avon Lake High School athlete punched at ticket to the ultimate prize, a chance for glory at the state track and field championships.  They will be joined by Christine Bohan, who started things off well for Avon Lake on…

ALHS Triple Athlete Earns Full Ride to UNC

Mike Parsons will attend the University of North Carolina and participate in track and cross country.

Mike Parsons is a special kid. A solid student, he is a friend to all a gifted athlete.  During his four-year high school career, he accomplished something that is pretty rare as a student athlete.   He won 12 varsity letters during his career at Avon Lake in three sports: track and field, cross-country and swimming. Yet you won't find him tooting his own horn. Instead he attributes his success to his coaches and teammates. His efforts have not go unnoticed and on a Tuesday afternoon at Avon Lake High School, surrounded by friends and family, he got the ultimate reward: a punched ticket for a free education, signing a letter of intent to participate in both track and field, and cross country at the University of North Carolina - Wilmington…

Avon Lake Athletes Advance After District Track Meet in Amherst

Several athletes move on to Regional action, which starts this Thursday.

Editor's note: The accompanying article was written by Matt Pawlikowski. The photo gallery was shot by Jim Votava. You have to believe in yourselves.  It's exactly what the Avon Lake High School boys track team did this past weekend at Amherst during District track and field action. When most wrote them off as a team, all they did was take home third place honors, just missing a trophy, with a number of athletes scoring points. "Our team has done great this year, in every single event - the field events, the sprints and distance," senior  distance runner Mike Parsons said. "They have all been doing their part this year. So yes, it was surprising, but we have confidence in what we can do." More important, the dream of a trip to the promised…

Avon Lake 8th-grader Heading to States

Anthony Theilman getting tips from former ALHS track and football star Mike D'Andrea.

Anthony Theilman never thought of himself as a trackman. As a matter of fact, for him the whole reason he went out for the team last year was to have fun with his friends. "I really thought of track as a social event," Theilman said. "But then I realized I have some talent in throwing and want to go far with it." Talent indeed. All Theilman did at the Junior High School Southwestern Conference Championships, was take home first in the shot put with a toss of 44-1, second in the discus (120 feet) and second in the long jump with a leap of 16-5. Admittedly, Theilman wasn't sure what to expect, considering he was one of the smaller guys out there. "I was pretty intimidated because I was one of the smaller guys there," Theilman said. "But I …

Athletes honored at ceremony May 14.

Over the years, Avon Lake High School has produced some outstanding athletes in a number of sports, athletes that not only have represented the school at a high level, but also gone on to future success. Saturday night at the Fountain Bleu Party Center, three more of those individuals along with track relay teams will join the already 78 individuals and 34 teams that are part of the Avon Lake Sports Hall of Fame. In no particular order, here is the latest pride of Avon Lake along with what they accomplished during their careers as an athlete and then some. Avon Lake Boys Track Wins SWC Conference, Girls Place Third

Pete Lancione, Katy Link have big night with multiple wins.

Avon Lake coach Rob Rocco got a Gatorade shower and with good reason Friday night. His Shoremen made history, winning back to back titles for the first time in school history at the SWC track and field championships.  "This is sweet," a drenched Rocco said afterwards. "My old coach Coughlin got real close to it, so its an honor. We knew it was going to be a tougher field this year, so we tried to cover the other events and were able to spread the wealth. It really worked out."  Avon Lake tallied 126 points on the night, more than 40 over second place Berea, who had 80 points. It marked the fourth time since 2000 that they had taken home the SWC crown. The Shoremen took several first place honors. Senior Pete Lancione won the 400 meter in …
