Let us know what sweet makes your heart go pitter-patter!
If flowers make your sweetheart sneeze and diamonds aren't in the budget, there's always chocolate. According to the National Confectioners Association, more than 36 million heart-shaped boxes of chocolate will be sold for Valentine's Day. And that doesn't include all the boxes of Malley's chocolate-covered strawberries! Forrest Gump said, "Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you are going to get." What Forrest didn't say is that there's nothing quite like biting into one of the chocolates and finding out it's the one you hate (coconut, ugh!). Share which chocolate treat you love. Vote in our poll, or, if you don't find your favorite there, share it in the comments.
Married couples share their experiences
At Sunday's Valentine's Day Married Life event at Hope Christian Church, some couples shared their experiences with romance, love and marriage. So if you're looking for wisdom, here are some tips. If you have your own to share, post them in the comments. And share photos of you and your Valentine in our Neighborhood Gallery! For more wisdom from the Melchers, check out the video.
Local businesses can help you say "I love you."
Did Valentine's Day sneak up on you? Don't worry. You still have time to get it right. And you don't have to drive far to do it. Here are some ideas right in Avon.
We asked for your favorite love songs, and you weren't shy about sharing! Thank you!
Unless you took the day off, you have to wait all day to be with your love... so to get you mentally prepared, we created a Patch Valentine's Day Mix Tape. Actually, you created it! We asked you to tell us your favorite love songs to add to the list, and you gave us more than 50 great tracks. To listen to the list, you need to create a Spotify account. Don't worry, it's free! Unfortunately, some of the songs aren't on Spotify, like Peter Gabriel's In Your Eyes and The Book of Love, among others, but we're grateful for your suggestions, nonetheless. These other songs will make you bubble over with that good ol' ooey gooey love. Mmm, mmm. If you have other songs you want on the list, leave them in the comments. Otherwise, have a happy …
It's Valentine's Day. Are you a happy participant or is it just another Tuesday? Take our poll.
According to the 2010 U.S. Census, there are 22,489 people living in Avon Lake. Of those, 11,082 are married or live with a partner. Another 7,100 are under the age of 18. That leaves 4,307 assorted individuals or about 20 percent of the population seemingly single, presumably half of which would fit into the gender you want to date. So do the math and if you’re single and hoping to meeting another unmarried person in town, about 10 percent of the population might be deemed dateable. Providing those not married are not in a committed relationship elsewhere and you’re willing to accept a partner between 18 and 98, who may or may not possess any one of several traits you may find undesirable. Avon Lake may not be the best place to find love …

Fun, food, games and a deeper message were on the agenda at pre-Valentine's Day event
In his next life, maybe Hope Christian Church associate minister Rolland Bryar will be a game show host. He was able to swing from hosting a round of Newlywed Game to giving a talk on love at Sunday's Married Life Valentine's Day event at the church. About two dozen couples came for food, fun and to share their experiences. Julia and Robert Lando of Avon have been married for 17 years. Valentine's Day means something different now than then, Julia said. "It's a reminder of how blessed we are to have each other," she said. They also know that romance still matters. For Robert's birthday last year, Julia surprised him with a weekend at a bed-and-breakfast at Niagara-on-the-Lake in Ontario. Three game couples -- Mark and Janine Porter, Kelly …

Today, let's talk kids and love. What do you hope your children learn about love from you? What messages are they getting from peers, media or other adults that you feel you have to counter? Share what you wish boys knew about girls, and vice-versa. And what you …
