2013 Wine Festival is Back, This Time on Saturday

Last year's successful inaugural event means more vendors this year.

Hoping to build on last year’s successful inaugural Avon Lake Wine Festival, Councilman Dan Bucci said the festival will return this year, but this time on a Saturday. The July 13 event will again be held at Veterans Memorial Park. The city is expecting to again receive a one-day alcohol permit for the park, where alcohol is not normally permitted. “The plans are very similar to what we did last year,” Bucci said. The inaugural event, held on a Friday evening last summer, drew more than 1,500 visitors. More than 1,000 people sampled wine from five Lorain County wineries at the event, which included art, music and food from area restaurants. “We want more food vendors from Avon Lake and are hoping for more (wine) pourers for shorter lines…

Poll: Do You Support Wine Sales and Sampling in Veterans Memorial Park?

Avon Lake is considering a one-day permit to allow wine sampling and sales at the Avon Lake Wine Festival.

It’s not a done deal: serving and drinking alcohol in a city park. City leaders are looking for feedback on whether residents think this is a good idea. Council is currently reviewing an ordinance that will allow, for one day only (July 13) for wine to be sold and drank in Veterans Memorial Park in Avon Lake. Sales and tasting will only per permitted in a cordoned section of the park, and not in either building, The Lake House or the Folger Home, both of which are park property. The reason? Sales and tasting of 2 oz. samples, and sales of full, unopened bottles of wine are expected to be part of a fist ever city-supported wine festival in the park. Current law prohibits the drinking and selling of any alcohol on city property or in any …

I'm a bit torn on this! If it is run properly and is a true sampling and sale, then my opinion is it should be allowed. I would think the "intent" of the law is to now allow parties or festivals with alcohol where folks traditionally get out of hand. If you've ever been to a wine tasting show, that is very rarely the case. On the other hand, the law is the law and the ordinance is in place. Tough…   more ›

City Eyeing Alcohol Permit for Veterans Memorial Park

Permit required for July wine festival.

For a few hours in July, the city is looking to allow having alcohol served and consumed on city property. Currently, alcohol consumption and sales are not permitted in any city park or building. The city is permitting a 4 p.m. to dusk wine festival on Friday, July 13, that will allow serving and drinking of wine from five scheduled wineries including two Avon Lake wineries, John Christ Winery and Klingshirn Winery. The ordinance earned support from most council members who saw the opportunity as a positive economic development move, but one councilman, Larry Meiners, opposed it at council’s May 29 meeting. The event is one of three festivals supported by the Avon Lake Waterfront LLC, a private non-profit organization hoping the festivals …
