By the narrowest of margins, Avon High School's wrestling team won the West Shore Conference tournament championship on Saturday night at the Avon gym. Zane Zeman, the Eagles star bound for the University of Minnesota, became the first wrestler to ever win four WSC titles with his win at 145 pounds. He was named tournament MVP. The Eagles finished with 160.5 points, just ahead of second-place Midview with 159.5. points. North Ridgeville was third with 146 points. This is Avon's fifth WSC title, and its first since 2005. After voters rejected a 1.75-mill levy for the Lorain County Joint Vocational School in last month’s elections, JVS will seek a smaller renewal levy in the March primaries, said Avon Lake Board of Education Vice President Pam Ohradzansky at Tuesday's board meeting. “This one is basically half of what we asked for before,” she said. “And it will be for five years, instead of 10.” Ohradzansky, who also serves on the board at JVS, said the vocational school will seek the renewal levy to cover operating funds, but it’s only part of the approach to balance its books. “We are looking at ways to tighten our belts,” she said. “But these are funds that are greatly needed.” More details of the levy will be …

Wrestler is first Avon High athlete to get Big Ten athletic scholarship
Avon High School wrestler Zane Zeman signed a national letter of intent Wednesday to attend the University of Minnesota. He's the first Avon High athlete to get an athletic scholarship from a Big Ten school. Zeman finished second at 145 pounds in the state championships last year. Avon High School wrestling standout Zane Zeman has made school history before the wrestling season even started. The senior signed a national letter of intent on Wednesday to attend the University of Minnesota. Athletic director Erich Frombach said that Zeman is the first Avon High athlete to get an athletic scholarship to a Big Ten school. He's also the first Avon wrestler to get a Division I scholarship, coach Mark Porter said. "Minnesota recognized a lot of things in Zane we've seen," Porter said. "He's improved every year. He's focused and extremely hard-working. But he's not an egomaniac. Wrestling is an individual sport, but he cares a lot about the team and his teammates."
