Avon Lake Police Investigating Thefts, Including $12,000 in Silverware

Silverware is stolen from home on Lear Road

Avon Lake Police Department is investigating a trio of thefts that occurred in the city in the last week. On Feb. 27, a resident of the 300 block of Lear Road reported that their set of sterling silverware had been stolen from the home earlier. The set is estimated to be worth more than $12,000. Then, on Feb. 28, jewelry was reported stolen from a home in the 300 block of Lear Road. The stolen jewelry includes a diamond ring, gold heart pendant and a wedding band, according to the police report. Finally, the manager of the Taco Bell on Avon Belden called police on March 3 to report that money had been stolen from the story. Linda, Even if we ignore the Amendment’s obvious purpose, a ban on “military style weapons” is still blatantly unconstitutional. It’s like saying that the freedom of religion means you can have most religions, but not Islam. Would a ban on Islam be constitutional? Of course not. The same goes for banning “some” guns. LoCo Blue 2013: Pete Soto Chili Cook Off Grows

Cleveland Heights police, Columbus police organization join growing cook-off this year

An event born out of an accident that resulted in serious injuries to an Avon police officer is growing strong and entering its third year. Pete Soto, an Avon motorcyle officer was injured on duty in 2010 when a vehicle struck his bike. His fellow officers launched a chili cook off the following year a a fundraiser for him. In 2012, realizing that Lorain County lacked a foundation similar to Cleveland and Columbus, they founded Lorain County Blue to assist families of officers down or critically injured in the line of duty in Lorain County and continued the Pete Soto Chili Cook Off.  The event has grown since its inception and on Feb.  23, from 5 p.m. – 10 p.m., the Lorain County Blue Foundation will be hosting the third annual “Pete Soto …

Shooting of Eighth-Grader Highlights Danger of Realistic Pellet Guns

Local police warn parents, students of lethal consequences of modified pellet guns

Avon Lake Police are using the tragic killing by Texas police of an eighth-grader holding a pellet gun and an incident in Miller Road Park to highlight the dangers of taking toy guns—including pellet guns--in public. On Jan. 5, Brownsville, TX student 15-year-old Jaime Gonzalez was shot to death by two police officers while in school after brandishing a carbon-dioxide powered .177-caliber pellet gun that resembled a real pistol. The shooting was ruled justified when the teen was warned to put down the gun and did not comply. The Texas shooting elicited strong reactions, but Avon Lake Lt. Sean Bockelman said had the incident occurred here, it probably would have had the same result. “We have to treat it as a real gun,” Bockelman said. If …

Man Pleads Guilty in Court, Walks to Corner, Attempts Carjacking

Euclid man will be arraigned in court on carjacking charges Dec. 13.

A man who pleaded guilty in Avon Lake Municipal Court on Dec. 8 to a misdemeanor charge, left the court on Walker Road in Avon Lake, walked to the corner gas station, and attempted to carjack a woman, police said. He could face felony charges. The man, 23-year-old Bryan Schiffbauer of Euclid, has been charged with robbery and assault and is currently being held without bond at the Lorain County Jail. According to Avon Lake Police Lt. Duane Streator, Schiffbauer had been picked up in Cleveland on an outstanding warrant from the Avon Police Department for possession of drug paraphernalia and brought back to the Avon Lake Municipal Court the morning of the incident. Schiffbauer pleaded guilty to those charges and was given a suspended $250 …

Lee Krejci Sr., 73, Retired Avon Lake Police Detective

Avon Lake flags will fly at half-staff this week.

Lee A. Krejci Sr., 73 of Vermilion and formerly of Amherst and Avon Lake passed away Friday, November 4, 2011 following a lengthy illness at the Cleveland Clinic surrounded by his family. He was a retired Avon Lake Police Detective and 25-year veteran of the department. “Lee was the perfect fit for the police profession,” Avon Lake Police Chief David Owad said. “He was instrumental in establishing juvenile bureau and worked many years as a detective sergeant. Owad said Krejci worked for the Avon Lake Police Department from 1964 – 1989. “He started as a patrolman and then a juvenile officer,” Owad said. “He became a sergeant in 1978 and moved on to the detective bureau.” Owad had high praise for Krejci. “He was held in high regard by co-…

Break in, guns missing A Forest Boulevard resident returned home Aug. 25 to find the house had been broken into. Money and two guns were missing. The resident believed the person responsible might be armed and in the attic. Avon’s K-9 unit was called in but no suspects were located. Lipstick on pigs, not cars A resident called police reporting that his car had been marked with lipstick while eating at Fratellos restaurant. Farmville Police checked on a Norman Avenue address Aug. 17 after neighbors complained of a loud goat causing a disturbance. The homeowner was advised and told police the goats were going back to the farm that night.   More Farm antics On Aug. 12, homeowners on Nottingham Drive and Brandon Place reported their homes were egged. Residents are Invited to Attend Community Police Academy

Community Police Academy is an eight-week course designed to give the public a working knowledge of the Avon Lake Police Department.

An eight-week program designed to give the public a working knowledge of the Avon Lake Police Department begins Sept. 14 and runs every Wednesday from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Each section of the course covers a separate area of department operations, from firearms to communications, patrol to computer forensics, and includes lectures, demonstrations and student participation. Officers from the department teach each segment of the program. Lt. Duane Streator said the goal of the Community Police Academy is to provide information to the public and to increase the rapport between the citizens and the officers of the Avon Lake Police Academy. “We held our first Community Police Academy in 2007. Avon, Avon Lake Safety Forces Take the Field to Fight Cancer

Police and fire departments come together at All-Pro Stadium in benefit softball game

The Avon and Avon Lake police and fire departments donned different uniforms on Saturday night, with pink accessories, all for a good cause.  Safety forces from both cities played in the third annual Breast Cancer Charity Softball Game at All-Pro Freight Stadium. The softball game featured members from the four departments playing to raise funds to fight breast cancer. Proceeds from the event go to Fairview Hospital Breast Health Center and the Gathering Place. Families, friends and both communities came out to support the event, despite a steady rain most of the evening.  The rain-shortened game ended with the Avon police and fire departments defeating their Avon Lake brethren, 20-8.  Fans who braved the elements were rewarded with a …
