Avon Lake Teens Caught in the Act Will Face Juvie Judge

Avon Lake police blotters include dogs attacking dog and plenty of fireworks calls

Teens caught in the act of late-night car rummaging A woman notified police two males were attempting to break into her auto at 3:03 a.m. on July 5.  Police responded and while the juveniles did not enter the woman’s car, two male teens 15 and 14, were caught soon after in another vehicle that had been left unlocked. The two boys, both from Avon Lake, were charged with underage consumption and petty theft. Avon Lake Police Sgt. Vince Molnar said the two had taken a small amount of cash and will be tried in juvenile court. Ohio Police, U.S. Coast Guard Are Out in Force to Stop Drunk Drivers This Holiday

State and local police have increased their patrols to seek out drunk drivers.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is warning you: Don't get behind the wheel impaired this holiday weekend.  Because the Fourth of July weekend is traditionally a dangerous period on roads, police are out in force to stop people from driving under the influence. Last Fourth of July, state troopers arrested 611 drivers for driving under the influence.  “Driving impaired or riding with someone who is impaired is not worth the risk," said Colonel John Born, superintendent of the Ohio State Highway Patrol. "The consequences are serious and real. Not only do you risk killing yourself or someone else, but the trauma and financial costs of a crash or an arrest for driving while impaired can be really significant." Avon Lake Police Department Will Get New K-9

Kimba, the most recent police dog, is now in retirement. Council approves $14,000 for new dog and 6-week training class.

The city of Avon Lake approved $14,000 to pay for a new Avon Lake Police K-9 and the accompanying six-week training class this year. The approved the funding at its May 23 council meeting. Avon Lake Police Lt. Sean Bockelman told council’s Safety Committee last month that Kimba, the force’s K-9, retired last year after almost seven years of service and the department is seeking a new dog. Bockelman was the K-9 handler for one of Avon Lake Police Department’s earlier dogs, Smoke. After retiring, Smoke became the sole responsibility of Bockelman. Smoke was followed by Kimba and the department is looking for a new K-9. City council approved using Gold Shield Canine Training in Columbus, the same company that trained Kimba. Last month, …

Avon Lake Police Department Welcomes Luke Hagedorn to Force

Newest member will serve as a part-time officer.

One of Avon Lake’s own, Luke Hagedorn, was recently sworn in as a part-time Avon Lake police officer. The son of Bonnie and Mark Hagedorn, Luke is no stranger to the Avon Lake Police Department: His father, Mark, retired as a lieutenant from the Avon Lake police department and is now the bailiff at the Avon Lake Municipal Court. Luke, 27, is a 2002 graduate of Avon Lake High School and also serves on the Fairview Park auxiliary police department and works in security for Key Bank. He earned an associate of science degree in criminal justice from Lorain County Community College in 2006 and graduated from the police academy in August of 2009. Fox hits deer with car, deer is dispatched

Police blotters, Feb. 8 - 16 Fox hits deer, deer dispatched On Feb. 12, police received a call about an injured deer near John Christ Winery. The deer was dispatched. Debbie Fox notified police she hit the deer but her vehicle sustained minimal damage. Try kick the can next time Police were called Feb. 9 regarding children playing paintball in the woods behind Williamsburg Drive. The children’s parents were advised. Keep the doors locked A Lake Road woman came home Feb. 8 and found footprints in her backyard leading to her window. Police noted footprints also leading to her neighbor’s house. Extra detail was assigned to the neighborhood. His driveway wasn’t plowed An Oakwood Drive woman awoke to find an unknown vehicle in her driveway. …
