Guess the "Grandma, I'm in jail" and "You won!" phone scams were getting boring for thieves, because there may be a new one making the rounds. A Kinzel Road resident called Avon police earlier this month after she got several phone calls from someone with a “foreign” accent threatening to crash her computer if she did not send them money. The woman said she would contact Time-Warner, her internet provider, and, if the person called back, make a formal complaint to police.

Avon police came to the aid of a man who had one (or more) too many at Mulligan’s, but thankfully did not try to drive. A Mulligan’s employee called police around 2:24 a.m. on May 7 after a cab had been called for him, but the man refused it, instead walking toward BJ’s Wholesale Club. Police found the man a few minutes later passed out in the grass by BJ’s. They brought him back to his room at Value Place hotel.

Avon police helped catch a man who had stolen a car at gunpoint in downtown Cleveland early on April 29. Officers attempted to place stop sticks on Interstate 90 westbound by All Pro Freight Stadium after the stolen car, a 2003 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, passed the Route 83 overpass at a high speed around 3:58 a.m. They weren't able to place the stop sticks and the driver went into Sheffield Village, where he turned around and headed back towards Avon.
