Woman Nearly Abducted at Circle K

The following arrest information was provided by the Avon Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

A woman had a frightening experience the night of April 30. She told Avon police she was approached at the Circle K by two men around 10:48 p.m. They attempted to force her into their car at gunpoint, the woman said. She got away. Police notified all area businesses, and advised 24-hour businesses on the matter.

Man Turns Guns Over to Police After Getting Fired

The following arrest information was provided by the Avon Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

A man who was fired from his job at Freeman Manufacturing got attention from Avon police after his now-former employer was worried about him possibly having a gun in his car. Police were on hand when the man was escorted from the building without incident just before 2 p.m. on April 30. Two guns -- described by police as a Glock 27 handgun with two magazines, and a Beretta 92F handgun with three magazines -- were found in his car. With the man's permission, Avon police will be holding his weapons for safekeeping until he gets his concealed carry permit in a few weeks. A cat who went on a walkabout returned home not with a mouse, but with what appeared to be a gunshot wound. The cat, named Gigi, was brought by her owners to Avon Animal …

Suspended License + Pot = Under Arrest

A man driving on Interstate 90 on April 17 drew attention of police and probably wished he hadn't. Avon police pulled over Albert Hathorn, 22, around mile marker 155 for a marked lanes violation. He was then arrested for driving under suspension and possession of a controlled substance (marijuana). Residents in two homes in Red Tail reported hearing gunfire just before 1:30 a.m. on April 18.  Someone who lives in the 4100 block of St. Theresa Blvd. called Avon police around 1:27 a.m. and said they’d been hearing gunshots for the past 30 minutes. An officer checked the area, but didn’t find anything.  A woman who lives in the 3700 block of Williams Court called around 1:54 a.m. to say she heard two gunshots around 1:05 a.m. Police told her …

Following Doctor's Orders Would Have Been Wise

The following arrest information was provided by the Avon Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

Instead of just a hangover, a man now has a DUI arrest as well after not following medical advice. Avon police were called around 12:19 a.m. on April 10 after staff at EMH Avon Emergency Care Center said an intoxicated man left the building against doctor's advice and without signing any paperwork. The man was seen leaving the parking lot in a silver Ford F-150.  A few minutes later, police pulled over and arrested Steven Hanks, 51, as he was getting onto the eastbound on-ramp to Interstate 90 from Route 83.

Picture-Taking Man Frightens Girl

A man taking pictures in the 32800 block of Elm Drive on April 9 caught the attention of residents, and Avon police. Shortly after 12:30 p.m., a girl was playing in the driveway of her home when she saw a man in a light blue car stop at the end of the driveway and take a picture of her. The girl, thinking the man was going to get out of the car, ran into the house and told her mom, who called Avon police. The man was gone when police arrived. One neighbor said he spoke with the man, who said to the neighbor that he worked for Lorain County doing appraisals and was taking photos of the houses in the neighborhood. Children playing basketball nearby said they saw the driver leaving the neighborhood, describing his car as “(University of) …

Two Women Charged With DUI

The following arrest information was provided by the Avon Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

Two women face DUI charges after being stopped by Avon police in separate incidents on April 8. Lee Salas, 46, was pulled over on French Creek Road for a marked lanes violation around 2:51 a.m.  She was then charged with DUI as well. Avon police said Caitlin Ritter, 20, was spotted by passers-by asleep at the wheel at the intersection of Schwartz and Nagel Road around 5:49 a.m. They called police, and officers came to the intersection, where she was charged.

Phone Scam Doesn't Work on Avon Man

The following arrest information was provided by the Avon Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

An Avon man was not the latest victim of  a phone scam, but he reported it to Avon police. The man told Avon police on April 2 that he got a call from a Mr. Gates of something called Winners International. This Mr. Gates said the man was a winner of $2.5 million and a 2012 Mercedes-Benz. All the man had to do to claim his prize, he was told by Mr. Gates, was send $499 to Western Union in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Instead of calling Western Union, he called the cops. Some children were caught by an Avon police officer while climbing into a dumpster on Aspen Lane just after 7 p.m. on April 5.  The officer warned them about it and sent them on their way.  A man was cited for drinking alcohol in a motor vehicle after being spotted sleeping in his …

Well, I admire the Avon man for alerting the police. It should be how it is for anybody who gets a scam call. That way, the authorities get to alert the public as well. I've read several scam attempts reported at http://www.callercenter.com and it's great that the victims get to include the scammer's phone number on their complaints. Booze and Road Rage a Bad Combination

A man is facing multiple charges after he got out of his car at an intersection, tried to open a woman’s car door, and then began tailing her. The woman told Avon police that she was southbound on Jaycox Road and did not get a left-turn arrow. That’s when Peter Klepak, 64, who was behind her, began honking his horn, she said. Klepak then got out of the car, yelled at her, and tried to open her car door, she said. The woman took off, continuing south on Jaycox, telling police that Klepak was still following her. Police told her to turn onto Schwartz Road then Reigelsberger Road, and head north on Center Road towards the police station. Officers caught up with them at the intersection of Center and Bentley. Nighttime ATV Riders Get Police Attention

Police were called to a home in the 3400 block of Pelham Place three times over the weekend as the residents said ATV drivers were out in the fields behind their home at night, making noise and yelling obscenities. They were gone by the time police arrived the first two times, but police saw what appeared to be flashlights in the field on the third visit, around 1:45 a.m. on March 31. Officers were not able to catch up with the ATV drivers. Two women were arrested for theft after store security spotted them leaving Kohl’s in Avon Commons with stolen merchandise around 5:21 p.m. on March 30 and called Avon police. After leaving Kohl’s, their car was spotted by Avon police outside Target as one of the women was seen heading into the store.  …

Fire, Police Levies Could be on August ballot

Renewal levies to be voted on by City Council next week

Renewal levies for the Avon police and fire departments could be put up for a vote in the August special election. Avon City Council will be voting in the April 9 meeting on submitting the levies to the Lorain County Board of Elections. Council discussed the levies during Monday's work session. "The quality of services we get from these departments with no increase in these levies in years is impressive," said councilman Bryan Jensen. The levies would be voted on in the August 7 special election. The fire levy is for .5 mills for five years, and will generate about $273,447 per year. The police levy is for .5 mills over five years, and will generate about $369,511 per year. The levies are for what is called "capital assets," such as …
