Bigger Problem: Deer or Deserted Stores...Cast Your Vote in our Poll

Cast your vote now (or add your own concern) for what problems you want to see addressed in 2012

With a brand new year comes brand new talk about what’s the most important issue facing Avon Lake. In 2011, the city saw its financial position solidify when a new line was announced for Ford Motor Co. and income tax receipts increased significantly over 2010. On the downside, several smaller businesses shut their doors in 2011, including Donatos, Clifton Web, the Floor Gallery, Stop 45, (after moving across the street and expanding) and closing soon—Blockbuster. Still, economic development remains a hot topic is Avon Lake, but not the only important issue. Plenty of people have expressed concern with the amount of deer and accidents involved with their overpopulation. Street and property flooding took center stage in 2011, no doubt …

Rocky River and Lakewood have a lot of business zoned land which equates into business, and attractions to draw people. They also have a population density 3-5 times that of Avon Lake. Comparing them to us is not possible. Also, Avon Lake's west border is The Ford plant and Poly one. That is more than a few square miles of nothing. We are exactly like Bay village with much less population density…   more ›

Dash Cam Rolls as Police Cruiser Hits Deer

Avon Lake has had 28 accidents involving deer this year. One involved a police cruiser. Take a look.

On Nov. 7, a routine patrol ride turned into a collision for one police officer, and his dash cam caught it all on tape. Avon Lake Ptl. Ron Cantleberry was following an ambulance down Jaycox Road when he struck a deer at 12:36 a.m. “It wasn’t there, and then … there it was,” Cantleberry said.   He said he wasn’t entirely surprised by the accident. “It’s not uncommon to see 50-60 deer each night,” he said. Cantleberry said for every collision there were probably thousands of near misses. The deer came from Cantleberry’s right—stopped mid road and then turned back—right in front of the patrol car. The vehicle wasn’t going too fast, which may have prevented more significant damage or injury. Cantleberry, who can’t recall a police car striking…

Car vs. Deer: Walker, Lake Roads Top the Hit List

Driving through Avon Lake? You might want to take extra care on these roads.

This is a continuation of an in-depth look at the overpopulation of deer in Avon Lake. With a burgeoning deer count in Avon Lake, it’s no surprise that a deer is occasionally going to come into contact with a vehicle, and vice versa. In 2011 so far, 28 incidents were reported to the Avon Lake Police Department resulting in 27 accidents. Of those reported, one deer was struck twice as it was crossing and another incident involved a driver running off the road trying to avoid a deer, which was not hit. Walker and Lake roads had the most accidents, with 10 collisions on Walker Road and seven on Lake Road. Five incidents were on Avon Belden Road (SR 83), one on Miller Road, one on Krebs (deer not struck) and two each on Moore and Lear roads. …

The deer are way more of a problem then they are worth. We need a comprehensive deer-removal plan for the city. What are our leaders doing to stop these beasts from overrunning the town?   more ›

Poll: Do You Support Controlled Bow Hunting in Avon Lake?

One council member wants the option of bow hunting in Avon Lake explored to control the deer population.

‘Tis the season. Reindeer may be practicing their flying skills for Christmas, but in Avon Lake, the question of deer overpopulation continues to take center stage. Avon Lake Councilwoman Jennifer Fenderbosch, who is completing a deer count in the city, said the city can support a healthy herd of 40 deer. She recently estimated there are more than 200 deer living in Avon Lake; too many to maintain a healthy deer population. Fenderbosch said she would like to see the option of bow hunting explored to keep the deer population under control. At a recent Environmental Committee meeting she said hunting would require a marksmanship test to receive a permit. Huntint would be permited during hunting season only properties that quality per ODNR …

Deer Population Threatening Avon Lake's Metro Park

Kopf Family Reservation supports 7-8 deer but up to 40 have been seen in the city's only Metro Park.

Walking through Kopf Family Reservation, one of Lorain County’s newest Metro Parks, one can’t help but notice the serenity of the dense woods – and the number of deer. Regardless of what time of year it is, strollers or bike riders taking advantage of the more than two miles of trails in the  L-shaped park off Electric Boulevard, dedicated as a Lorain County Metro Park in 2008, are almost certain to have a close encounter with one of the dozens of deer that call the reservation home. And while deer may seem symbolic of the woods’ tranquility, the sheer number that live and pass through each day are affecting the park’s vegetation and ecosystem. In northeast Ohio, the ideal capacity for deer is about 30 per square mile (640 acres). “The …
