Why is there an historic home in Veterans Park? If you have lived in Avon Lake for decades you know the answer. Most of you have arrived since the 70s so don’t have a contextual view of the Folger Home. To enhance your sense of place and history, let’s establish the prestigious heritage of the Folger Home (Assembly Hall) by examining local history. We’re calling it: What do you know?—How Did We Grow. Thomas Folger moved to the Avon Twp. Property owned by his Father in 1875. He inherited the property when Henry died in 1885. Thomas had begun a vineyard operation on 150 acres at Avon Point in 1878 (now Veterans Memorial Park). In 1889 Thomas moved his family to Elyria because the Folgers did not believe Avon Township could offer their four …

Popular event is Saturday, Nov. 12 at the Folger Home
Avon Lake’s grand old dame, the historic Thomas Folger home, has seen its fair share of renovations in the past decade. Supporters of the big yellow house that sits near the shores of Avon Lake are hoping to continue those renovations, in part with the proceeds of its annual Chili Cook Off, held Saturday, Nov. 12. The home’s patrons have made significant strides. Workers have been knocking off items on a lengthy wish list that ranges from $2,700 for decking to outside porch lights at $25 each for the house located in Veterans Park. There are still plenty of items on the list, including interior lights, a toilet paper holder and an ADA bathroom light and chili organizers are hoping that proceeds from the chili cook-off will help. The event …
