Mayor: Councilman's 'Illegal Activity' Comments Are Unfounded

Zilka said a meeting first would have been prudent.

Avon Lake Mayor Greg Zilka took an opportunity at the March 26 council meeting to say that neither City Hall nor the Utilities Department would be “distracted by unfounded charges of illegal activity based on incomplete information.” Zilka’s comments were in response to Councilman Larry Meiners’ comments on March 12 that members of the Municipal Utilities department had conducted “illegal inspections” during the city’s sump pump inspection program.  He asked for the program, put into place to help alleviate basement flooding, to be rescinded but received no support. Meiners: Illegal Utilities Work Could Mean Fires, Floods for Homes

Councilman says Municipal Utilities conducted illegal inspections.

Councilman Larry Meiners is saying Avon Lake Municipal Utilities broke the law and has exposed the city to serious legal exposure. Meiners told fellow council members at the March 12 council meeting he wanted the sump pump inspection program yanked as a result. Meiners comments came after he learned 61 homes had been inspected for electrical and plumbing work by Avon Lake Municipal Utilities employees without having thee required permits pulled from the Building Department. “These homes have been illegally inspected for electrical and plumbing work,” Meiners said. “The legal exposure we have on this is unbelievable. Dave - Thank you for your comments. We agree the work should be done quickly and correctly. We also believe any contractor who did the work should stand behind the work performed. Contractors need to know and adhere to building codes. If a contractor will not stand by the work, ALMU will assure that the project is finished "to code."
