Heritage Hoopla, city council and Swim For Diabetes are on this week's agenda
Get a head start on Easter fun at Spring Into Avon in the French Creek District this weekend. A pancake breakfast, the Easter Bunny and deals at local stores mean something for all ages. Heritage Hoopla, the basketball battle between staff at Heritage North and Heritage South, will finally be held at 7 p.m. April 8 at Avon High School. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The game was originally scheduled for Feb. 25, was postponed because of snow. Swim for Diabetes at is going on this weekend, and French Creek YMCA is one of the sites for it. Participants will be swimming from 6 to 9 p.m. April 8. Avon High's swim team has several members participating, and you can support their efforts. Popular--but controversial--cafes are becoming more and more popular in Ohio
Following in the footsteps of cities such as Avon and Strongsville, Avon Lake is taking action to prevent Internet cafes from popping up. At least for the time being. On Feb. 28, City Council approved a six-month moratorium on the creation, operation and/or development of Internet gaming/sweepstakes cafes anywhere in Avon Lake and mandate internet cafes obtain permits. Councilman Dan Bucci said the legislation was not aimed at permanently banning the cafes, but would allow the city to see how the state and other cities react to them. “We want to get a handle on what other communities have done and allow the state to review the issue and give municipalities guidance," he said. Anyone that thinks Internet cafes are harmless ought to look at the cities they are now popping up in. These same cities also started having payday loans.
