West Nile Virus Hits Record Number

Lorain County has one reported human case; 28 cases have been reported statewide, 26 deaths nationally

With an increase nationally and in Ohio of West Nile Virus (WNV) warnings are being dispatched to take precautions against infection. Last month, Lorain County mosquitoes tested positive for West Nile Virus. As of Aug. 22, the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) reported there were 28 human cases of WNV in Ohio in Allen, (1), Butler (1), Clark (2), Clermont (1), Cuyahoga (8), Franklin (2), Lorain (1), Lucas (3), Miami (1), Montgomery (3), Putnam (1), Richland (1), Sandusky (1), Warren (1) and Wood (1) counties. No deaths have been reported in Ohio. Last month, the ODH reported nine cases in the state, including three in Cuyahoga County and one in Lorain County. Mitt Romney ‘Republican Victory Center’ Opens in Avon Lake

Avon woman is site captain for Lorain County Republican support center.

The Republican Party and Romney for President campaign set up the Lorain County Republican Victory Center in Avon Lake July 16, opening a phone bank and information center in Learwood Plaza that will represent the party locally 114 days before the November General Election. U.S. Congressman Bob Gibbs, who is the Republican Avon’s ballot for a congressional choice in the General Election spoke to a group of 50 supporters at the center during the noon ribbon cutting in the storefront near Giant Eagle that previously housed The Floor Gallery at 375 Lear Rd. #J. Avon, Avon Lake Prepare for Fourth of July Celebrations

Fireworks are July 3 and July 4 this year.

Avon and Avon Lake are readying for Fourth of July festivities. And with fireworks held on consecutive nights, residents in both communities can catch two days of celebrations. Not enough fireworks? At deadline, there were 312 firework shows scheduled for Ohio. The city of Avon will be hosting a “two for one” Fourth of July event. Baseball fans can take in the Lake Erie Crushers game as they take on the London Rippers on Wednesday, July 4. After the game at All Pro Freight Stadium, visitors will be treated to a fireworks display. The city and team will be sharing the costs of the fireworks. Air Quality Advisory for Lorain County on Father's Day

Asthmatics and those with respiratory condition should take extra care.

The Ohio EPA has issued an air quality advisory has been issued for Lorain County, Greater Cleveland and Akron for Sunday, June 17. The Ohio EPA suggests residents, businesses and local governments should voluntarily reduce activities that contribute to ozone air pollution. Be proactive by reducing or eliminating unnecessary motor vehicle trips, and consider carpooling or use public transportation. Consider setting your home or office air conditioning thermostat slightly higher. Refuel vehicles and mow grass after 7 p.m. Asthmatics, those with preexisting respiratory conditions, the elderly and young children should consider reducing outdoor activities.

Avon Lake Goodwill Store Set To Open June 14

New store will be open 7 days a week and accept donations.

The new Avon Lake Goodwill store in Learwood (Giant Eagle) Plaza is one of several new businesses readying to open in Learwood Plaza in the next 30 days. Store manager have set a grand opening is scheduled for Thursday, June 14 with a traditional ribbon cutting ceremony at 10am. During the ceremony local officials, community leaders, and Goodwill representatives will welcome the new store to the community.
