Lundy on Women’s vs. Men’s Pay: There’s Still a Pay Disparity

State Rep wants to eliminate pay difference between the genders

In the year 2013, there continues to be a gender pay disparity in Ohio and the United States. Recently our country recognized “Equal Pay Day” in April to call attention to the pay disparity that still exists between men and women in America. This month I introduced HB 120 with my colleague, Denise Driehaus of Cincinnati. The bill calls for the creation of the Gender Pay Disparity Task Force. We are urging lawmakers to work together with us to support a study that will lead to recommendations on eliminating pay disparity in our state. A recent analysis of the wage gap, produced by the National Partnership on Women and Families, and by the American Association of University Women, found that women in Ohio earn on average 77 cents for every …

Probably most women's pay-equity advocates think employers are greedy profiteers who'd hire only illegal immigrants for their lower labor cost if they could get away with it. Or move their business to a cheap-labor country to save money. Or replace older workers with younger ones for the same reason. So why do these same advocates think employers would NOT hire only women if, as they say, …   more ›

'House Concert' Tonight in Avon Will Feature Amy Speace

Fresh off NPR's Mountain Stage

Some area fans of Amy Speace and "singer-songwriter/folk/Americana music," are hosting the artist tonight at an indoor "house concert" starting at 7 p.m. (doors open at 6 p.m.) in Avon. Last week, the New York Times featured Speace under the headline, If You Like Judy Collins, Try Amy Speace. The Baltimore native and Amherst College graduate will be at Jeff Hudson's house tonight (RSVP required, see below). "We are fans of Amy and are on her mailing list," Hudson said. "She sent a note out last week that she had a last-minute cancellation in her tour and was looking for someone between West Virginia, where she just played NPR's Mountain Stage Sunday night, and Ann Arbor, where she is playing the Ark tomorrow night, to host a house concert…

Avon Lake Demands Refunds After Strike, Republic Will Comply

Wants one week credit for every trash day compromised.

Avon and Avon Lake customers of Republic Services will be getting a refund. Avon Lake Councilman Dan Bucci drafted a letter signed by Mayor Greg Zilka and six of the seven council members requesting a refund for the two weeks Republic Services was on strike. The letter was sent to David Kidder, Republic Services spokesman. Residents in Avon and Avon Lake were reporting trash still had not been picked up one full week after local Republic Services workers went on a second strike in April. The letter said the “sympathy strike” concerning the ongoing labor dispute in Youngstown between Republic Services and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 377, has caused "great inconvenience" to Avon Lake residents, noting the company failed …

Avon: Trash Pickup is This Saturday and Sunday

No recyclables, please.

The city of Avon said at 4 p.m. on April 19 that Republic/Allied Services will be picking up trash on Saturday, April 20 and Sunday, April 21. Residents should put out their blue trash containers. Recyclables will not be collected. Trash pickup has been delayed to all Republic/Allied Services customers in Ohio and three other states this past week after local sanitation workers went on strike again "in sympathy" with striking Youngstown Republic workers. Earlier this week, a Republic representative said non-union, out-of-state workers would be driving sanitation trucks this week to pick up trash. Pickup was delayed in Avon Lake, with residents in parts of the city still without trash service as of Friday morning.

These types of Unions will continue to be a problem. They went on strike for something that had NOTHING to do with Avon Lake. Listen, any other real, honest, hard working person decided to take a few days off of work to say they sympathize with a cause that had nothing to do with their check writers, they would be fired, justly so. Fire'em all and let those who are unemployed and want to work …   more ›

Gov. Kasich Proposes Increasing School Funding, Lessening Mandates

The governor’s plan also includes funds for a special grant, designed to encourage schools to try new approaches to increasing achievement and decreasing cost.

Gov. John Kasich today unveiled his school funding reform plan, “Achievement Everywhere,” which aims to distribute funds fairly to districts and give principals more autonomy. The plan will be part of the governor’s overall 2014-15 budget proposal, which is expected to be released next week. Thursday’s proposal includes $1.2 billion in new money for schools during the next two years.  Kasich told reporters on a conference call Thursday afternoon that the additional money is possible because the state has cut costs in other areas and brought in new jobs, which increases the state’s overall revenue. He said his plan would be fully funded from the start, rather than phased in over time. Ohio’s school funding formula, which is based on …

The Blizzard of '78: Share Your Memories, Photos

35 years ago this week, the Blizzard of 78 paralyzed Ohio, Michigan and Indiana

With temperatures peaking in the upper 50s this week in Cleveland, it’s a perfect example of how unpredictable the weather can be. It 35 years ago this week, the “Blizzard of ‘78” struck; a stark contrast to this week's weather. Formally referred to as the Great Blizzard of 1978,  dumped more than a foot snow from Jan. 25-27.  That was accompanied by temperatures dipping to 0 and wind gusts of up to 48 mph, according to the National Weather Service’s storm review. The Blizzard was deemed the worst in Ohio history, resulting in 51 deaths.
