Three-run fifth inning by Joliet Slammers puts Crushers in a hole.
A three-run fifth inning by the Joliet Slammers was the difference as the Lake Erie Crushers lost to the Slammers, 5-2, in the opening game of the Frontier League Eastern Division playoff series on Wednesday night in Joliet, Ill. The Crushers played for the the third straight game without star shortstop Andrew Davis, the team reported. Davis injured his foot during last weekend's regular season-closing series against the Traverse City Beach Bums. With the game tied, 1-1, the Slammers chased starter Paul Fagan from the mound in the bottom of the fifth with their three-run spurt, led by Erik Lis' RBI triple. Kellen Kulbacki provided the lone offensive highlight for the Crushers, hitting a solo home run in the sixth inning. But that was the …

Loss to Joliet leaves Crushers a mere half-game in front of Traverse City
The Joliet Slammers have been party poopers for the Lake Erie Crushers all season. Tuesday night was no exception, as the Crushers lost to the Slammers, 7-3, in Joliet, Ill. The Crushers are now 2-8 against the Slammers this season. The loss, the Crushers' third straight, dropped them to 43-41 and also narrowed their lead over the Traverse City Beach Bums for the second and final Frontier League Eastern Division playoff spot to a half-game. Crushers clinging to second place in Frontier League's Eastern Division with less than two weeks left in season
The Lake Erie Crushers haven't clinched a playoff berth yet, but their postseason chances are a lot better than a month ago. A 10-game winning streak has vaulted the Crushers into second place in the East Division of the Frontier League in the final two weeks of the regular season. Manager John Massarelli likes the way the team has come together in the second half after a very disappointing start. The Crushers opened the season with a 7-17 start, but has gone 36-23 since. That includes two home losses to the Windy City Thunderbolts this weekend that dropped them 6 1/2 games out of first place, but still in playoff contention. "It has been great to see the team concept here, the way things have come together," Massarelli said. "We had a …

Tempers flair during a scorcher at All-Pro Freight Stadium
The Lake Erie Crushers finished a short homestand completing a sweep of the Rockford RiverHawks with a 10-3 win in front of a sun-soaked crowd 2,867 at All Pro Frieght Stadium. But not before a bench-clearing brawl interrupted the game. Tempers were as hot as the temperatures, as a melee, sparked by a collision at home plate earlier in the game, stopped the contest for several minutes in the bottom of the third inning. Crushers third baseman Evan Sharpley and Rockford catcher Carlos Dominguez jawed at each other after Sharpley drew a walk, and then they got violent, prompting both benches to clear. Several scuffles broke out and in the end, five players were ejected from the game. Sharpley and Ruben Flores were tossed for the Crushers. …
