Steam Powered: The Nickle Plate Locomotive No. 765 Passes Through Avon, Avon Lake

Mother's Day run passes through to cheers of bystanders.

Avon Lake resident and photographer Bob Quinlan took the initial photo with this article of the historic Nickle Plate steam locomotive No. 765 on its way from Rocky River to Bellevue on Mother's Day. The train, built in 1944, made its last revenue run in 1958 and then began to deteriorate. In 1972, the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society (FWRHS) formed and began restorations which were complete in 1979. The train was back on the tracks from 1979 through 1993 pulling 100,000 passengers over about 52,000 miles of special excursions in 16 states. The train enjoyed a period of fame before more work was required for it to run on a mainline. In 2010, the train became Amtrak certified and in 2011 made numerous trips on the Cuyahoga Valley Line…

Fall Gardening Tips Help You Get a Head Start on Spring

Avon lawn and garden experts share advice

Local gardening experts say fall is the best time of the year to plant, fertilize, and weed. Avon garden store owners and managers shared their advice on what to do now to get a head start on next spring. Jamie Haas, general manager of The Rock Pile, explained: “Fall is an excellent time to plant perennials, trees and shrubs. Why is fall planting so good for plants? Fall often gives us dependable rainfall so you are sure to have prime soil conditions! “In the fall, the warm soil encourages root growth. Roots continue to grow through the winter. In early spring, roots continue to develop at a faster rate, and top growth begins. Fall-planted plants quickly become well established features in your landscape. Because roots are established …

Shouting Match Erupts at Council Meeting

Language in ordinances gets interchange-area landowners worried

After last week's work session of Avon City Council, where mayor Jim Smith appeared to have eased the minds of Nagel Interchange-area landowners by recommending that no assessments of their properties be used to fund the city's share of the project, it looked like the interchange project would take this next step forward without more angst and drama. So much for that. In a heated exchange, Rock Pile owner Brian McKeown said language in an ordinance covering the city's agreement with Richard E. Jacobs Group over paying for the interchange appeared to bring assessments back into the mix. McBride went to the podium as members were taking up a vote to suspend the rules requiring three readings of the ordinance before voting, allowing them to …

Nagel Interchange Dominates Council Meeting

Citizens not letting up on city government

The number of items on Avon City Council’s work session agenda Monday night was small compared to the crowd waiting to address members during public remarks. Residents and business owners near the proposed I-90 interchange at Nagel Road continue to express their displeasure over a city plan for the property owners to pay a third of the $27 million project's cost. Under the plan, special assessments would be added to tax bills over 20 years. “This assessment must not go forward,” said Brian McKeown, who owns the Rock Pile Garden Center on Nagel Road. “We are the people you work for. Somehow the (Cleveland) Clinic and the Jacobs Group need to come up with the money. This is their development. This is fiscally reckless. You (council) took an …

Council Tables Interchange Deal With Jacobs

Law department wants time to rewrite ordinance authorizing the agreement

The scheduled vote by Avon city council on the financing agreement with Richard E. Jacobs Group for the Nagel Road was taken off the agenda of Monday night's meeting. Law director John Gasior said that, based on some comments last week, he wanted to do some "minor" redrafting of the ordinance before submitting it to a vote. It will be on the agenda for next week's work session. That didn't stop two people from speaking up during public comments. Mark Haehn of Wellington said the city should give the public time to review the agreement before putting it to a vote in council. "What you folks are doing ... is putting us in a corner where we have no recourse but to seek a referendum," he said. Gasior said the final cost of the interchange …
