Ninth annual Avon Heritage Duct Tape Festival to be held Father's Day Weekend

Lions and tigers and duct tape! Oh, my! Safari is the theme for this year's Avon Heritage Duct Tape Festival, which will be held June 15, 16 and 17 at Veterans Memorial Park. "We're going to have some really great stuff this year," said Patti Sack, assistant communications manager at ShurTech, the Avon company that makes Duck Brand duct tape. Befitting a safari theme, this year's grand marshal is Outback Ray. He will also do a meet-and-greet at the festival, where visitors can see and maybe touch his animals. Avon High Students Show Creativity, School Spirit With Duct Tape

Avon-based ShurTech sponsored contest in school before big playoff game

Several Avon High School students showed that duct tape isn't just for ducts. It's for dresses, pants and hats. ShurTech, the Avon-based maker of Duck Brands duct tape, donated 350 rolls of purple and yellow duct tape for a spirit day contest in advance of Friday night's OHSAA Division II football playoff game. First prize was $100, second was $75 and third was $50. Students then went to town, making everything from dresses to hair accessories to full outfits. One boy came as a ninja, said principal Kristina Dobos Buller, and had to be cut out of his costume when nature called. As the Casey Anthony murder trial enters its fifth week, more and more evidence is brought to light. The case has attracted huge national media attention. And a local company has found itself part of the sensational trial. The trial has hit home locally as Avon-based ShurTech, makers of Duck Brand duct tape, has been mentioned in the case. The Florida State Attorney’s Office released approximately 500 pages and photographs of legal and investigative documents in the case against Casey Anthony. Caylee Marie Anthony disappeared from her Florida home in June 2008. Her body was discovered five months later. Her mother, Casey Anthony, was indicted on charges of first-degree murder on October 14, 2008, and was in county jail when jury selection …

The eighth annual Avon Heritage Duct Tape Festival brought out duct tape fans from local organizations to Miss America. Fun uses of the product made by Avon-based ShurTech were all over the place, from the sporting items showing this year's "Real Fans Stick Together" theme to Miss America 2011 Teresa Scanlan's own creations. Avon Heritage Duct Tape Festival Satisfies Sports Nuts

Lots for sports fans to see and admire

The eighth annual Avon Heritage Duct Tape Festival this weekend might have parents of college age kids or wives of the sports nut a little on the edge. Not because it was risqué, but because this year's theme, "Real Fans Stick Together" and Grand Marshal Miss America, drew plenty of curious fans to the festival that also featured unique sculptures, including a bowling alley and putting green. "I was amazed at what you can do with tape," Robert Harrison of Lancaster, Penn., said. "I'm a sports nut, and when I heard about the theme this year had to make the six hour trek. Miss America Loves Her Duct Tape

Teresa Scanlan is Grand Marshal of Saturday's Duct Tape Festival Parade

In addition to her long list of community service, talents and interests, Miss America 2011 has an unusual hobby. Nebraska-native Teresa Scanlan, 18, loves to create items using duct tape. She even included her passion for the sticky fix-all on her Miss America contestant resume under “interesting facts.” Representatives from ShurTech, owner of the Duck Tape brand reached out to her and sent a dozen roses and Miss America sash, both made of Duck Tape, and University of Nebraska Cornhuskers Duck Tape in hopes she would consider coming to the festival. Duct Tape Festival Features Miss America, Parade, Fun

Event has become an Avon tradition.
