The Best ‘Staycation’ Spot in Avon is…

No need to live this city for vacation — we've got it all here.

Take me out to the ballgame.  Heading out to a Crushers game seems to be the “staycation” of choice for folks in Avon, opting to stay local on vacation. For many of us, taking a vacation doesn't necessarily mean taking a big fancy trip. For some of us, it means just staying put and relaxing. So, earlier this week, we asked where you'd go if you stuck around on your staycation. According to our completely unscientific poll, heading out to a Crushers game brought in 61 percent of the vote, and a trip to the Miller Nature Preserve brought in 38 percent of the vote. Next week, we’ll be looking for the establishment with the best outdoor patio.

What's the Best Staycation in Avon Lake?

The Aqua Marine was once a premier vacation destination. It's gone but the city remains a great place to visit in the summer.

Looking to stay a little closer to home this year? Don’t have the time, money or patience to put up with air or car travel? Did you know there was a time when the city of Avon Lake was one of the premier vacation destinations in the country? People would arrive from all over to stay at the Aqua Marine, which in its heyday was a top vacation destination in the United States. The Aqua Marine resort is now home to condos but Avon Lake’s proximity to Lake Erie, natural beaches and extensive parks, it’s not a bad place to vacation this summer. People still come from around the world to spend a few days at Sunset Shores Bed & Breakfast, take in a sunset or join a fishing excursion (after picking up some bait at John's Bait & Tackle). Maybe your …

Just a memory about the Aquamarine. You could stay ther all year round. In 1971 we made reservations for New Years eve, and had a great time. There was a great restaurant, bar, indoor swimming pool, and lots of entertainment then.   more ›

Where's the Best 'Staycation' Destination in Avon?

Take our completely unscientific poll and let us know what you think.

For many of us, taking a vacation doesn't necessarily mean taking a big fancy trip. For some of us, it means just staying put and relaxing. On Monday, we asked where you'd go if you stuck around on your "staycation." Here are some ideas: Catch a Lake Erie Crushers game at All Pro Freight Stadium; get in some whacks at West Pines Golf Range; or take in some of the natural beauty at Miller Nature Preserve, especially the conservatory. Have a nice lunch at the cafe. So, what do you think? Take our poll and let us know. We'll select a winner at 5 p.m. Friday, May 11 and announce it in a story on Saturday, May 12. Voting results posted in real time shall not be deemed official until Patch has reviewed and confirmed all of the votes.

Best Staycation Destinations: This Week's Readers' Choice

Where in town do you go to have some fun on your days off?

For many of us, going on vacation doesn't necessarily mean taking a trip. Going on vacation can simply mean chillin' at home -- going out to eat, doing some fun things in town and maybe getting a few household chores done. We're so glad someone invented a name for this kind of non-travelin' vacation: The Staycation. This week's Readers' Choice focuses on Best Staycation Destinations. Beginning today -- Monday, May 7 -- and through 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 9, we'll be asking for your recommendations for places to go while on a staycation. Where to go on a staycation? A local putt-putt course ... the historical society ... a bowling alley ... the spa ... the video arcade. These are places where you can relax and have a little fun. Give us your …

My husband and I enjoy going out to Newbury, which is just about an hour away. We'll do an overnight at Punderson Manor. The park is so beautiful and they have tons of hiking trails, a lake to go boating on, a sandy beach, and plenty of rural roads for biking. It's also just worth a day trip. In addition the Manor is so old and neat! And supposedly haunted lol. If that's not up your alley they …   more ›
