I would add that you have to both like and be good at your chosen profession. Cleveland has an abundance of starving, unhappy attorneys and accountants. They went to school. They passed the big test. But they aren’t successful. There are plenty of people who chose a course of study for the title or the money.

    Danarino,

I believe your quote came from Mitt Romney. It is easy to agree with Mr. Romney since one can usually find a quote from the one day he agreed with your position.

Positives? My biggest and easiest positive is that my least healthy clients are going to be able to access more affordable health insurance in 2014. Whether it is the uninsured woman who called last week who is 5'5" / 350' or the Solon family who has a number of small, but expensive preexisting conditions which forces them to pay more than they can afford for coverage. These people, and many like them, will find the doors open to them for the first time and the rates far more reasonable.

Of course, their access comes at a price. Young people and healthy people at almost any age will pay more. In some cases, the premiums may increase by up to 80% according to some studies.

Danario - No harm. No foul.
I chose 2007 as a point in the past prior to the changes in the health care legislation. Pick any point in the past and you will find some really good and really awful ways health care was paid for in this country. Every change along the way has helped and hurt us. The PPACA is just one more attempt to get our patchwork system organized. I personally think it is not a good law that will cause more problems than it will solve. Unfortunately, there are some people that just wanted to keep things the way they were prior to the 2008 election.
As per K.O, I'm not a big fan. I find him too shrill and too predictible to be effective. I'm a big fan of free speech which includes my right to pan his articles.

Danario, This blog has never contended that we should return to 2007 and pretend that all is well. The system we had was not sustainable. But the horror stories of the link you attached tell only half the story.
Somehow none of these "victims" ever have any responsibility for their problems. Their poor choices and refusal to help themselves are brushed aside. Medicaid, the government program that provides for payment for health care for the poor, isn't limited to the E/R.. It is the large number of poor who choose to either not sign up for Medicaid or who only use the E/R that continue to drive the costs.
I am not blaming the poor, exclusively, for being poor or under/un insured. But it is foolish to leave them blameless.

  • On the Blog Post What happens when real people post and comment on a website like Patch using an alias name?

I am standing by my comments. If Mars is really that uncomfortable without the alias, who am I to judge? Some of us are very open about our opinions and beliefs. And my identity is easily verified. My picture is on this post, my blogs, and my business website. I have been active in numerous civic and political organizations. And I am not alone. Some of the other people in this thread are easily found. That is our choice.
There are people who hide behind an alias to post rude and hateful comments. Eventually you just pass right over them. I found the first comment on this blog, by Mars, to be wistful and the possible beginning of a very interesting conversation. If the only way to get that comment was to allow an alias, then I'm totally in favor of that option.

Lou, I think you are making way too big a deal out of this. My posts and comments carry my picture and my real name. (who would make up Cunix?) I fully accept that we really don't have much, if any, privacy anymore. So I choose to be totally open. My choice. And since it is me, really me, out there, my comments and posts have to reflect my opinions and beliefs. NO PC. NO BS.
But that is just me. If someone wouldn't be comfortable expressing their honest opinions without an internet alias or chooses to hide his/her face in the picture, then that has to be OK, too. Some sites are forcing people to use their own names as a way to alleviate the more hateful comments. There might be some value in that. Some people might be afraid/embarrassed to post some of the comments I see on Patch if the author was identifiable. It is a trade-off.
And in answer to your last question, Lou, yes I trust my banker, etc... I trust you and all of our readers, too. That doesn't mean that I'm posting my Social Security Number. I guess that is where my line is drawn. Let everyone draw their lines where they wish.

    Totally agree with Garry.

Theory vs. Reality - a fun discussion if you have nothing better to do and your money isn't involved in the outcome. Sadly, we do have more important issues occupying our time and our money is very much at stake.
Mark, if you wish to be so adamant about your opinion, please take the time to read the core material. Then explain to us how the government is the problem in the cases Brill follows.
Government is a lot like food in that we don't do well with either too little or too much. We may never find the right balance, but the idea that anarchy is preferable is difficult to take seriously.

Lou, the key point is that we are being distracted by an arguement over WHO pays the bills without ever discussing WHAT bills we are paying and WHY. Much of the last four years of Health Insurance Issues With Dave has been devoted to opening the rest of the discussion. Brill investigates real claims - the actual bills people have been forced to pay for their health care.
Yes, it will take a bit of effort to read the whole article. Our attention spans have shrunk. Our willingness to put forth the effort to learn all of the details has diminished. But it is only through taking the time to master the issues will we be able to have a complete discussion and have real change and progress.
