Lacrosse Club Starting Middle School Program

The Avon Lake Lacrosse Club will be starting a boys middle school lacrosse program in time for the Spring 2013 lacrosse season, the club’s Board of Trustees announced Oct. 21.

The middle school team will seek to join the Ohio Middle School Lacrosse Association immediately.

The team will be coached by Ben Sherman, who played midfielder for the Club's high school lacrosse team and who played goalie for the Avon Lake High School’s varsity hockey team before graduating in 2012.

"We are thrilled to have an alum of our high school lacrosse program come back after graduation to help us launch a middle school lacrosse team," Brian Lamb, president of the non-profit Avon Lake Lacrosse Club, said. "Ben was one of the founding members of our first high school lacrosse team, so he knows what it takes to build something that will last."

Kevin Walz, head coach of the Club's boys high school team, praised Sherman.  

"Ben is a quick learner, and he really wants to pass on the knowledge he learned as a player to younger kids," Walz said.

The Avon Lake team will be open to boys in seventh and eighth grade who attend Avon Lake city schools. Trustees hope the middle school program serves as a feeder for the Avon Lake Lacrosse Club's high school lacrosse team.

The Club plans to start a girls middle school lacrosse program in another year or two, as its newer girls high school program continues to develop.

The boys high school lacrosse team has played three seasons. The girls high school lacrosse team has played one season.
