The police will be doing their part to patrol on Halloween, but parents can do a little extra to ensure their children's safety on a "scary" night.

Parents preach all year long to not take candy from strangers — well, of course, unless it's Halloween.

It's that time of the year for fun and fright, but there are some safety precautions to consider before taking those little ghosts, scarecrows and princesses out to trick-or-treat.

As is the custom in Avon Lake, officers will be in marked cruisers patrolling the neighborhoods during Avon Lake's trick-or-treat time, accompanied by members of the Avon Lake Kiwanis Club, who will be passing out candy. Click here for the date and time for Halloween this year.

Law enforcement officials have said said parents should provide calamine lights (glow sticks) to their children, which will be helpful in keeping an eye on the children and illuminate them to drivers.

It's also important to know your surroundings. A list of registered sex offenders can be found on the Lorain County Sheriff website. There are 11 people listed in Avon Lake's zip code, and eight in Avon's.
