Monday is Hawk Migration Day in Avon Lake

Check the schedule for dates to view thousands of hawks migrating over Avon Lake.

The Avon Lake Recreation Department is hoping that Monday, April 15, proves to be a successful "Hawk Migration Day."

"The Hawk Migration program that we have put together includes two separate sessions," Recreation Director Gary Gerrone said by email.

The city held an indoor session at The Lake House April 10 describing how to see the parade of hawks and explain why it happens. Thousands of hawks, eagles, falcons, vultures, osprey and more migrate low over Avon Lake each spring.

The second session takes place outdoors and needs to be timed up with suitable weather conditions in order to be successful. Gerrone was hoping April 13 would be suitable, but the weather conditions didn't cooperate.

"Weather-wise, the next possible date is Monday," he said.

Gerrone said he will keep track of the weather and continue to announce the best flight days now through mid-May. Mornings are generally best for watching the hawk migration.

Gerrone recommens heading over to Bleser Park between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m.  where he and others can watch the "parade of hawks."

He added that most tree-free locations around Avon Lake would also work.
