May 23 Garden of Empowerment Tour Will Be Taped for Cable

Take tour of this powerful garden and memorial at Avon Lake High School at 3 p.m. on Monday. Refreshments, entertainment provided.

A tour of the Garden of Empowerment at starting at 3 p.m. on Monday, May 23, is open to the public.

The tour will highlight some of the features of the garden, dedicated on Sept. 11, 2009. It was inspired by two Avon Lake High School students and a teacher. The garden is a place to reflect and serves as a solemn reminder of the past, including those lost serving the country and those killed on Sept. 11, 2001.

 The tour will include entertainment by Musician/entertainer "Jimmy T" will perform original songs honoring all veterans.  Refreshments will be served.  The Community Happenings television program, hosted by Jan VanWagner and Jean Sekulic, will tape a segment for their show from the event.

The Garden of Empowerment was sponsored by the Avon Lake Key Club members and Avon Lake Kiwanis. It includes a 24-foot statue and a remembrance garden and serves as an outdoor classroom.

Also included in the Garden are memorial plaques honoring Avon Lake's fallen heroes: Army Capt. Michael Medders Jr., (killed in Iraq in 2008), Marine Capt. Jason Meiners (killed in a flight training mission in 2001) and Marine Cpl. Dennis Bergenstein (killed in South Vietnam in 1967).
