5 Things: Fall Festivals and Foliage, Flu Shots and Getting Shredded

It's fall. Get outside and revel in the weather. You know it's going to change fast.

We've got a mixed bag this month from the famed Woolybear Festival to getting your flu shot before the flu finds you.

  • Woollybear Festival - Vermilion   This famed Lorain County fall tradition is a must-attend.  The is Sunday in downtown Vermilion. Enjoy an old-fashioned parade emceed by Dick Goddard, shopping, entertainment, food, caterpillar races, and Goddard's winter forecast. He'd better not predict that this winter will be as bad as last winter.
  • Fall Colors Hiking Series - Vermilion   Enjoy the changing colors of autumn at Vermilion River Reservation during this hiking series. Join a Color and Coffee hike, enjoy a relaxing fall hike and then warm up in the Carriage Barn with cup of coffee. Bring the kids out on the trails during a Leaf Collecting Hike to experience the colors of fall and collect some amazing leaves! Any questions, call the Carriage Barn at 440-967-7310. The hike is from 9 – 10 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 9.                                         
  • Fall Hay Wagon Rides and Corn Maze – Carlisle Reservation  Saturdays and Sundays, now through Oct. 30, Noon-3pm, Equestrian Center of Carlisle Reservation. Enjoy a fantastic fall day and take in nature’s colors and splendor with an old-fashioned hay wagon ride and corn maze. Horse-drawn wagons leave about every 15 minutes. Rides last approximately one half hour. Waits are common for this program; please plan that into your trip as the last wagon departs at 3 p.m. After a hay wagon ride, try your navigation skills through the reservation’s large corn maze. Each year features a new design. Cost for each event is $1; children under 42” are free. The concession stand will be open. Pumpkins will be for sale from Grobe’s Fruit Farm. Outdoor programs are weather dependent. Call 440-458-5121 in case of inclement weather. 
  • Flu Clinic in Avon Lake   Stay healthy this winter…and don’t forget your flu shot. A flu shot clinic is being sponsored by The Lorain City Health Department on Saturday, Oct.  8 at , Performing Arts Center Lobby, 175 Avon Belden Road, Avon Lake, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Click here for payment information and details.  
  • Avon Lake Community Shred Day   Get shredded and protect your identity. Each household may bring up to five standard size copy paper boxes OR five grocery size bags of personal, confidential documents for shredding at the southwest corner of the Items acceptable for shredding include: Bank information and cancelled checks; obsolete invoices; phone books; outdated bills; mortgage and loan information; medical information; letters, envelopes and ledgers; other clean paper; staples and small paper clips. There is no charge to Avon Lake residents for the service.
