DiscoveryWorks Receives IEEE Grant

IEEE grant will fund science kits

DiscoveryWorks, Avon Lake Public Library’s hands-on art and science learning center, is the recent recipient of a $2,000 grant from IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers)-Chicago Section as part of their Science Kits for Public Libraries Grant Project. The grant is in support of DiscoveryWorks proposed project, “Tree House Science Club – and Beyond!”

DiscoveryWorks manager Ed Zovack, known as Mr. Z to Avon Lake students, said the grant will be put to good use.

“This grant allows us to provide additional services to our patrons. We will now have more comprehensive science kits for use in our Tree House science clubs and for our patrons to check out,” Zovack said.

The purpose of the grant is to educate students about the benefits of mastering math and science, and to provide seed money for the creation of library programs and projects that will provide hands-on opportunities in electronics for students K-12.

Specifically, the grant will support the cost of science kits - especially those that provide prepared experiments for use by students K-12 and educators, including parents, teachers, club leaders, and/or librarians. Ideally, the kits will demonstrate to students the skills required for a career in electrical engineering.
