Trash Workers on Strike Again: Avon, Avon Lake Affected

The city of Avon is reporting there will be no trash pickup April 15 and 16, however Republic Services Area Marketing Manager David Kidder said it wasn't definite yet.

"Tomorrow is still a questions mark,” Kidder said Monday afternoon. “Does it look real good we’re going to pick up tomorrow? No. I don’t know that 100 percent at this point."

Replacement drivers are currently picking up "emergency pickup" for hospitals and schools.

Trash on the curb may need to be brought back in. Check back soon for updates.

Trash workers in Lorain County are again on strike Monday, April 15, marking the second time this month trash pickup will at the best, be delayed in Lorain County.

“We got a call this morning,” Elizabeth Gideon, Mayor Greg Zilka’s secretary, said. “We don’t know at this point when the trash will be picked up. We know a lot of people are at work right now. It may be over today so we’re not saying right now to bring trash cans in.”

A secretary at Avon City Hall also confirmed the strike but said she was hoping to know more by noon today.

Residents are not  being asked at this time to bring in trash cans. (Check back later for updates.)

Zilka said he talked to Kidder who said workers were on strike in Ohio and three other states.

The April 1 walkout lasted one day, with trash pickup resuming the next day.

According to the Teamsters website, Sanitation workers employed by Republic Services/Allied Waste went on strike in Ohio March 28 to protest the company’s violations of federal labor law," the site said. The striking workers are members of Teamsters Local Union 377 of Youngstown, however Republic workers in other areas, including three other states, are striking in a show of solidarity.
