Holiday Mail for Heroes

Holiday Mail for Heroes is our chance to thank our troops!!

The Lions Club is sponsoring the local Holiday Mail for Heroes program from Nov.  1 - Dec. 1.

The project goal is to get our troops a Christmas card to show our appreciation for their sacrifices-especially during the Holidays when they are apart from loved ones. The program is a Red Cross project with a big assist from Pitney Bowes who screens the cards for safety and pays for postage to the various bases and hospitals.

The Lions would like people to remember the troops when buying Christmas cards and pick up an extra pack or two.

The cards should be made out to "Dear Service Member" and have a short note of gratitude and a positive Christmas greeting, and all cards need to be signed. Cards cannot contain any addresses or phone numbers can be exchanged. The cards should not be put into envelopes since they have to be scanned at the clearinghouse. The cards can be dropped off at the American Legion Post 211 in Avon Lake, and in Avon at Taylor Rental on French Creek, and Avon Eyedesign on Detroit Road.  Large numbers of cards can be picked up by calling Jim at 440-933-5967 or by contacting any Lions members.

We are looking for groups that would like to take part in this program. Church groups, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, office groups, sports teams, or families who might like a Holiday project and would like to show our troops their gratitude.  The cards can be home made, and do not have to be expensive cards, the message that the card contains is the true gift. For a vivid look at what this program means to the people who receive these cards-take a look at the video from a military hospital when these cards are delivered-then tell me you don't have time or it's not important!

In conjunction with the Holiday Mail for Heroes program, the Lions are sending Christmas cards to the 600 plus veterans that reside at the Veterans Home in Sandusky. These cards are being addressed to each resident from our roster from the Home. The American legion Post 211 is helping out with this program as well.  If you have any questions about these programs, please call 440-933-5967, email me at jimangus59@aol.com, or stop by any Friday in November at the Legion from 5:30 p.m. - 8 p.m.

I hope you have all your loved ones near you this Christmas, but our troops will be at their posts, far from their loved ones.  Thanks.
